The grim sound of carbon road bikes

More than once I've got towards the end of a build and then had the slowly dawning sinking feeling that I've forgotten the fecking foam sleeves and it's got to come apart again. It's demoralising, there's nothing wrong with external cables, I'd buy the aero thing if there wasn't a fecking MAMIL...

The grim sound of carbon road bikes

What the feck is that noise? Turn round expecting a low flying Apache to appear on the horizon and start looking for cover. No, it's a bloke on a TT bike with a disc wheel.

I know they are but, just to confirm…

The cartridge will come out of the cup, couple of taps on the end of the axle with a soft mallet is usually enough. :)

    Best all round bottom bracket

I like the RaceFace taperlock and Royce at the blingier end of things but in reality you can't go wrong with a UN-71/72 or the Tange LN-7922 as mentioned above. Aside from a few grams in weight, they both last for ages and are relatively cheap. The Royce/Raceface do have easily replaceable...

Sold 26" Mavic 117 CD SUP Wheelset, Hope Ti Glide Hubs & Michelin WildGripper x Sport Tyres (NOS), 8 Speed Cassette.

These are the same thing as the Mavic one (that they do still sell) but a third of the price. Work a treat, on both ceramic and bare aluminium rims. https://gcabrasives.co.uk/product/garryflex-abrasive-cleaning-block-extra-coarse-120-grit/ May be useful to whoever buys these lovely wheels, GLWS. :)

    Ugliest bike on Ebay??

Probably should be: Original, as found by me last week, buried in the back of the shed of the house I've just moved into. Internet says it's worth a few quid so I'll chance it.

Whats the worlds nastiest pedal, designed to destroy shins

Perhaps oddly, the worst shin/pedal twatting I've had came from a XTR SPD. Pedals and probably more crucially, the shoes to go with them, have come on in leaps and bounds. Sharkbites and Triple-Traps looked like they had all the grip in the world but really didn't, just an uncanny ability to...

Wanted XTR M901 headset 1 1/8 (edit title)

Trying to fit a 26.4mm race on a 27.0mm fork? I really can't think of another reason it'd crack/split. Split races only work with cartridge bearings or if there's a separate steel race for loose bearings to ride on. :)

    Anti back-pain-stem recommendation please!

I used lock ons for a long time, then realised that no plastic sleeve gives more room for rubber/foam = More comfortable. I'll deal with a little more ball ache for that. I swap bars around a lot. Allen key down the grip and a squirt of the never ending Lynx Africa supply, works every time.

    Anti back-pain-stem recommendation please!

2.5/3mm ball ended allen key gives the best chance of not splitting, air compressor is best though. I've given up with ESI's myself.

    2012 Charge Duster

I have three trains of thought with the wheels and brakes on this: Keep it cheap, Shimano hubs, they now do a cartridge bearing centrelock hubs, RRP £50 for the pair. Laced into the Crests I already own with 32 revolution spokes and get a set of MT200 brakes. A bit more: Hope Pro 5 hubs with the...

    Ugliest bike on Ebay??

The rider probably can't either ! :) Honestly if it was under £200 posted, I probably would. The frames more than likely decent being a Giant and one day I will own a Girvin fork. You're right though, not together and not at that price. :)

    Riveted chainrings. I'm oot.

    Anti back-pain-stem recommendation please!

People always assume the lower back pain comes from being leant right over. It can also be because you're not stretching your legs out, i.e. your saddles too low. I've had many people flat out refuse to put it at correct pedalling height because "I can't touch the floor". Fine, deal with the...

    2012 Charge Duster

This won't be done any time soon but thought I'd throw some parts on it. The fork and wheels obviously won't stay. Probably not the chainring either but it's a start. 👍 😁
