It's interesting to note that the rear brake and gear cable routing on yours has been changed. It looks as if the gear cable originally came straight out of the gear lever without any outer cable. Whoever changed it must have just used a bit of black outer rather than find some matching white...

Wouldn’t the new piece of tube need to be a larger diameter than the original steerer tube? In which case a headset will not fit it. Or am I missing something?

A long shot I know, but anybody got a set of Cinelli Mod.67 Pista Handlebars they want to get rid of? Must be the Mod 67 390mm width Pistas, not the various Criterium versions and preferably the pre 1980 Cinelli crest version, although I would consider the post 1980 winged logo ones.
