This place is bad for me.... shall I buy an early 90s Kona?

The price is about 2x too high for the complete Kilahuea, but it is a great bike in excellent condition. However, if you are anything like [us], you will find a much deeper gratification from assembling one from a bare frame. The hours of tinkering following by a spirited maiden voyage is...

    Why does my headset rock?

It is confirmed that the fork bushings are not loose/worn giving the feel of a clunky headset? Correct me if I misinterpreted your post - the lower cup that is pressed into the headtube fit loosely? If so, it’s worth removing and rotating it 90 degrees. Clean up any burrs in the headtube...

Anyone ever been satisfied with Cantilever brakes ?

I love canti’s, particularly the look of ‘em. Of course I’m old now and avoid mud and rain. Canti’s were all I knew when I rode aggressively. A good tuning with the hanger as low as possible, fresh pads and a brake booster stops my old fat butt in time. It’s probably ignorance as I have...

Cantilever brake suggestions for a '94 bike

If you’re willing to spend, Maguras really are fantastic. Otherwise a brake booster on just about any reasonable canti set will provide good braking power. The M737 and M560 canti’s have always done it for me.

    Thomson

Similar cracks have appeared in several of my motorcycle clip-ons. Those were my fault, as I did not follow torque instructions. I've since learned my lesson. As such, there are 2 Thomson stems and 2 seatposts in my fleet. 5 other Thomson components have been sold from project bikes. Of...

    Is it too much purple?

Good Lord, that’s far beyond excessive. There’s enough purple to accessorize 4 bikes. Maybe 6.

BB Bearing cup cross threading / Drive side

I don’t think it would cross-thread on removal, particularly since it is fully inserted unless it was cross-threaded when it was initially installed. I suspect it may be galling. Is the frame aluminum or steel? Note: WD-40 is neither lube nor penetrating oil. The best penetrating oil is a...

Should I attempt an upgrade? (-97 team marin)

Steel Marins ride great. They are light, compliant and rugged. I modded a Hawk Hill and of all the bikes in the garage it is by far my favorite. I urge you to do the same without a second thought. Add a 1x for inexpensive reliability and V-brakes for safety. It will be the epitome of...

Rat Bike Build - GT Palomar

After viewing pics of the frame in the campfire I was sure it was ruined. That came out exceptionally well. Great patina, the contrast of the welds sets it off, and the subtle logos…..dude, that’s a beauty!
