    New tool day

Picked this freewheel vice up for under £20 which I thought was pretty reasonable. It also works! It can be bolted direct to a workbench, but I think I'll fix it to a block of metal / wood so I can hold it in a vice.

    Brooks Scape Frame Bag dimensions

I've posted this in a few places, but no joy. Just wondering if anyone has a Brooks Scape Frame Bag (the smaller one) to take some dimensions which aren't available on the product page? Brooks don't respond to their "Contact Us" page grrrrr.... I need to figure out if the nose of the bag will...

Sorted Hail Mary... T.A. Cyclotourist Double Chainring Bolts

This is the longest of long shots but I don't suppose anyone has a set of T.A. Cyclotourist chainring bolts they are willing to sell? They are 7mm diameter (as opposed to more modern 10mm chainring bolts) and come in a set of 6 each with a 3.4mm spacer which sits between the outer and inner...

Dave Russell - Back to Blue

Picked this up today and was wondering if anyone could shed a bit of light on it. I've googled and got some basic Dave Russell info back, but couldn't find out much about the range of bikes he produced & whether this was a diamond or a lump of coal. Some of the parts seem a bit incongruous, so...

    1964 Moulton Mark I (finished!)

This is the second one of these I've done now and this one's a favour for a friend. It belonged to his gran from new and he wants something to remember her by, so a sympathetic restore is the order of the day. It is one of the Bradford-on-Avon built bikes and superficially looked OK, but some...

    Liability Insurance

I'm 100% sure I'm not alone on the forum in servicing bikes and building wheels for friends and family. I've never really given any thought to a "what if something goes wrong" scenario.... until last week. A couple of months ago, a friend asked if I could fix a creaky bottom bracket on a bike...

Any ideas what these tools are for?

I'm on another (non-bike) forum and someone posted a couple of pics of some DIY(?) sockets they picked up in a box of random bike tools at a car boot. I'm guessing they must either be for a specific bottom bracket or freewheel, but I can't find anything which matches the pattern of slots. They...

    Sorted Moulton Head Tube Badge

Looking for a metal Moulton headtube badge. Bike isn't period correct, so anything suitable considered thanks.

    Which circlip pliers?

I've managed for however many years without any circlip pliers on the basis I don't use them very often. When I do need one, I go through the usual rigmarole of circlips pinging off round the workshop, losing the ends of my fingertips, doing a bodge job with pliers, tweezers etc. and general...

    Retro PlusGas

If you work on retro bikes, it's a fact you own a can of PlusGas. However, a Sunday lunch trip to see the folks accompanied by my dad's normal suggestion of "let's have a look in the garage, I'm trying to have a clear out" means I now own some retro PlusGas to go with the retro bikes. Have a...

    Moulton Standard M1 1965 (finished)

This has been a slow burner, but I've made a bit of progress recently so I thought I'd put a few pics up. It was bought as a "project" at the Moulton club meet at The Hall in Bradford-on-Avon about a year ago. The serial numbers K65 and 160064 indicate it was built in the Kirkby factory in 1965...

    Peugeot Black Mamba (finished)

Friend was having a garage clear out before Christmas, so this got passed on for a general tidy up before deciding what to do with it. As usual, forgot to take a shot of the bike before I started stripping it down. Was in a fairly unloved state, but hopefully the issues are surface deep and...

    Fixed cup removal (with pics)

Guaranteed I'm not telling anyone anything new with this post, but for the sheer satisfaction of removing a very, very fixed bottom bracket cup I'm going to post up a few pics of my Sheldon Brown fixed cup remover. The fixed cup in question... defiantly refusing to move even a gnat's chuff after...

    Polishing clear-coated aluminium parts

I feel as though I'm underachieving getting old clear-coated aluminium parts looking fancy, e.g. crank arms, brake arms etc. My usual approach is wash with warm, soapy water then a *lot* of elbow grease and Autosol, rather than attacking anything with the polishing mop and compound. However...

    Wanted Hozan C-203 lockring pliers

Very, very long shot, but does anyone have a pair of Hozan C-203 lockring pliers they would part with? Cheers, Richard

    New fork day

I know there isn't a lot of "retro" left on the bike, but there is now even less after the South Downs Way, a very poorly cut steerer tube (previous owner) and a dearth of 1" JIS headsets with zero stack height conspired to wreck my headset / front fork a couple of weekends ago. New forks...

Bit confused by 1998(?) Rockhopper A1 FS bottom bracket

I'm sprucing up a Rockhopper A1 FS which I think is 1998ish. Just taken the bottom bracket out and was a bit surprised by the sizing. It is a 73mm shell but only 107mm across the axle ends. I can't see any marking on the BB although a forum Specialized catalogue from 1997 suggests it might be a...

    South Downs Way

Did the South Downs Way over the weekend. Scenery was absolutely stunning. Pics attached, which unfortunately don't do it justice.

    Colour matching touch-up paint

Just wondered if anyone had any helpful tips for sourcing touch-up paint to colour match various old frames. After a lot of initial success with the colours "black" and "white" I'm now struggling. Good example is this Rockhopper in acid green (pre-clean). I've tried buying random "lime green"...

Confused by GT Avalanche seat post

Just picked up a nice '98 GT Avalanche but I'm confused by what is going on with the 27.2mm seat post. The post and saddle clamp have parted company and were only held together by friction from a cardboard shim which was stuffed into the post. I'm probably being an idiot, but are these two...
