What to do when a bike looks like this.

If you just want it stable until it finds a new owner: 1) store it in warm dry place 2) spray/wipe it down with wd40 or fluidfilm or kroil, some light oil. The oil barrier isnt durable but will impede rusting. Inside the frame too!

What to do when a bike looks like this.

Right, I see the majority of the project's time will go to doing the paint. The rust would be gone in an hour with a media cabinet - no time at all compared to masking, sourcing paint, practicing, vacuuming, etc. It just doesn't make sense to paint without getting the rust out. Nice or not I...

What to do when a bike looks like this.

The naive part is thinking the converter or miracle chemical is going to make the problem go away. The rust is still there and is still hungry, and now you can't see the surface so the problem is hidden. The only case where a rust converter has 'worked' for me was using POR15 on rusty 3/16"...

What to do when a bike looks like this.

Yeee… rust converters are for the naive. In my experience they never quite work. They dont work even a little bit. Frustrating as it sounds youve got to get the rust out 100%. A bike frame will fit in a blasting cabinet, mask all the good areas and then go at it with glass bead and take all...

1986 Land Shark Dirt Shark MTB

wow. 1986. I remember mtb in 1986 and they nothing looked like this. It’s like an alien arrived to show us what mtb will look like. I am having trouble imagining the sort of vision i would need to buy something like this new. I’d love to know the history of this bike and see some photos...

Retro MTB that can perform today

Amazing. Indeed they were amazingly supple when new but im surprised you kept yours running. Multiple of those headshocks were very unreliable for my family. Im pissed at cannondale for leaving their customers in the lurch without parts. They were my first ‘never buy from again’ promise.

Dilemma time, what to keep.snd what to sell from the ti collection

If I keep an old bike it’s because of its charm. Lightning has oodles because of the stupid ‘triple triangle technology.’ Just looks alone it’s weird, it’s also light and comfy and they’re beautifully made. The other 3? Meh. Especially the Raleigh. I remember them being awful to ride when new...

Not bad at all for a stiff bike with a steel fork.

Anther death on a dangerous decent

Yeah I guess that is the thing for me. These athletes are idiot male young adults and they have about as much self control as a trained fighting dog. I was immortal at that age. No free will I was in thrall to testosterone. I understand the joy of competition but these kids need actual...

Anther death on a dangerous decent

I used to free solo. It felt great, i was fit and aware and i wasnt going to fall. But it wasnt my job and noone knew about it. I was there for myself and have no regrets. Joy and purity of sport, etc: i think the organizers need to find a better way. If you want a high speed descent then pad...

Anther death on a dangerous decent

Theres an unsanctioned race in pittsburg where only the climbs are timed. Nobody wants a high speed race through the city. Here youve got pros with pro skills making pro choices but… they basically need to ride right to their limit and beyond for their paycheck. And theyre young men. Pretty...

    Broken Litespeed Archon

The warnings about the difficulty of repairing ti are real. The ti really really will crack and oxidize of you try without keeping the oxygen away while it’s hot. Where I live there are custom ti builders but the cheapest fix for my slightly cracked seat tube was much more than the value of my...

Is the price of parts putting you off?

Theres precedent for depreciation. Ive this collection of 50+ vintage beer steins that i got from my father who got them from his father. Steins are safely wrapped in boxes in my basement. They are nice to look at but… there was a time when they were worth $20k or more? And now their value is...

GT RTS Team ‘94 build “dilemma”

I still think be all end all are the xc pro thumbshifters. Xt are a big step down. Ss7 levers wouldn’t be the worst with onza cantis? Chicken stix are too fancy.

What can you tell me about Rustworm?

Also, I think I succeeded with a partial repair. I practiced on the stem that was to receive a full repaint. It’s pretty much impossible to properly strip with sand paper. It’s very important to strip all the rust and bad primer off the target metal, then clean, then primer. Mistake people make...

What can you tell me about Rustworm?

Some steel is quite hard, the rust will travel under the primer but doesn’t immediately damage the steel. Bike I bought was less than 10 years old though. I took all the rust down to gray metal with a media blaster and glass bead. The 2” strands of rust made no impression but there was pitting...

    Anyone Tried Head Tube Reducers?

What a concept. I heard chix dig scars so what do you has to lose? I cant see a dr until next year because i wont hit my deductible this year. Aligns my needs with my wallet but- im sure some *other* people put off going to dr even when its free… :( Carbon. Yeah. Some bits are just bad. I...
