I rarely commute on my (fat)bike in winter, but I can relate. The depth of cold you folks get on the prairies is impressive and far worse than we get on the east coast. I lived in Edmonton for a while and it was no fun to ride when it was -40C. Good luck with the car!

The joints around the BB aren't fillet brazed, are they? They look like welds, and if so, they're a lot cleaner on your frame than on my Implant. I was surprised at how rough they looked given DeKerf's reputation. Is it sacrilegious to say that out loud?

A '95 Rockhopper (in red/white) was my first properly good mountain bike. I still know where that bike lives and its current owner promised to sell it back to me when he's done with it.

Another vote for a Trek Y here. I have one setup weight weenie (~22 lbs) and one set up for trails with a 5" travel Z1 and beefier tires. Both are fun and comfortable to ride and both have lockout rear shocks, which makes road work easier.

I hadn't noticed how slim the chainstays were - they're much closer to my Tracer than M1, but it's interesting how your wheel attaches via the chainstay, not the seatstay. I guess they hadn't adopted the FSR style Horst link at that point. My Tracer had the Uzzi link installed in this picture...

I ran Codes on my VPFree years ago and found them underwhelming. They had decent modulation, but seemed to lack power compared to other setups. Does swapping levers change the feel?

Looking forward to seeing this progress! I think I'm just about ready for paint on mine as well. The mock up stage was more work than I expected, but it's almost there.

I try to use period correct(ish) parts, but the parts I would have had at that time if I could have afforded them. I'll often finish a build using whatever parts I have available in the shop and then pick away at making it 'correct' later on. Sometimes I just build something with parts I think...

I think Sugino rebranded them as Strong Arms for Specialized.

I have a few SIDs of that era with modern discs on them. Lots of adapters available to fit whatever configuration of caliper mount you have and whatever rotor size you want.

I don't put many miles on my fat bike (rigid 26" wheel Specialized FatBoy) but it's an absolute hoot to ride - it's the bike version of a monster truck. I tow my kids around in their sleds and ride with them while they cross country ski in the winter. It's just as fun in the summer as a change...
