You should have a bell. However, so many people have ear buds in their heads that they never hear your bell, and they often take up the entire pavement or pathway they are strolling along. That irritates me.

I got a 2003 Trek 800 for free, sans a front derailleur. It was a Deore LX, I believe. What's compatible? (The goal was to use a Deore LX front derailleur, of course... perhaps something compatible/cheaper?) Thanks in advance.

Got this shot hiking with my daughter late last month. You can see how the forest fires up here in Alberta affected the sun. We probably shouldn't have hiked in such bad air quality... But we did.
