    Thick as Thieves

In short, not to necessarily scrap, but be more careful in these times where / when the public money goes. I'm like the next the man, I love looking at art, cultural pride, unique items, being educated from an engineering and an aesthetic sense. I certainly don't agree with smashing things to...

    Thick as Thieves

Barges that can't go under canal bridges towed by a pony horse would be a good starting point. :D

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

From memory BITD they were always a fiddle prone to failure in bad weather. The wheel part is magnetic, and the sensor is a coil with no moving parts. They need to sit close to each other. Weak points are the contact from the handle bar mount to the sensor (crimped if I remember right), and...

👍 .... or your parents to loose? Who remembers as a kid being "instructed" to go to the local Police and have the post-code stamped on the BB shell?

Valves not aligned, but it is a drive side photograph 👍 Still think it's possible to have a decent bike but fully agree it's just got to look a bit rough, covered in a layer of dirt and grime and not stand out.

🤔 Beckons the question why sales outlets for new bike sales can't be arsed either? That is the logical start point for traceability, along with warranty, new ownership and building up a critical mass of data. Personally I'm too sceptical that a register and sticker is a better answer than...

Soon we can buy our own nuclear fusion reactor. Just connect it up to W10 on an old laptop. I'm confident Cortana and Copilot would be able to manage it just as if it was a kitchen appliance.

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

@vcballbat - that porteur will be terribly hard to identify and date. I first thought a Motoconfort, but I don't think it is. Very similar mudguards which are very distinctive. This is a Cazenave but a very different frame and probably later...

Anyone have details on how the Avocet 30 cyclocomputer magnet ring works?

Very very fair enough. It's all for love and not for love of the wallet in this weird environment. Sometimes. Obviously. Good on you for sharing your exploits as these will get rarer. Good on you if you can get the blessed thing to make any sense. Had an early version back in the day as a...

Hunt a bike with one fitted, check it works, buy, keep the velo computer, and flip the rest.

BoTM Bike of The Month September 2025 - now taking entries

👍 Punchy / Brief - not a saga. Up to everyone to do their own research. No build thread means a bit of an half arsed entry IMHO.

    Early Bontrager Race Lite

I'm certainly not that good with Campag stuff, but had a fair bit pass my hands recently for one reason or another. The Chorus 10 speed brifters do not need to be soot-epoxy levers. The Centaur are as I've understood practically the same, and also rebuildable. They are sought after...

👍 - what cage length? The M750 is practically identical. https://www.disraeligears.co.uk/site/shimano_deore_xt_derailleur_m751_sgs.html Drop me a message if you are struggling / desperate.

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

^ Lovely that. Cocottes usually refers to only the replaceable rubber hoods on drop-bar STIs / brake levers. It is peculiar. Suspect it may come from the side profile shape of a brake hood resembling a silhouette of a chicken? Oh la la.

For Sale FS: Soviet kharkov and takhion road and track parts

:) Retro goodness. Who would have ever thought to copy Mafac and then cut off 1/4 of a brake shoe to have front and rear specific. All in it's time. 👍

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

A bit too tight with the mudguard IMHO. Not forgetting operating it and what that means. Cable operated was offered by both Simplex and Huret more-or-less at the same time of suicide lever shift. It took time to lift off.

    Vintage French randonneuer's and porteurs.

Yup. Love the drillium too. Lay in on expensive items that have so-called already been optimised and do a good job in finishing. There's also something going on with those Mafac stradle cable yokes that I've not exactly figured out yet. That is what wine is for tonight. It will become apparent...
