    1998 Kona Cinder Cone build

Took a second test ride today, with the broken seatpost replaced and the front wheel's cones lubed and tightened. Was pleased with how the bike rode -- responsive and quite light. Bar some ongoing tinkering (including a nicer bottle cage), I think this one's done.

    Today's Ride

Well, the missus is dragging me off on a holiday on Monday so am packing in as many rides as I can before we go, especially as the weather has decided to be nice for a change -- today was 17C, clear and sunny with not much wind. Where we are going will be hotter (c30C) and very humid, so even if...

    Today's Ride

Nice spring day: sunny, cool wind. Did my usual lunchtime 1-hour circuit incorporating gravel roads and rough forestry tracks. Due to recent rain it was pretty gloopy in the shade, while the sun had dried out the more exposed spots. Bit of variety never hurts . . . Found myself behind a large...

    1998 Kona Cinder Cone build

BTW, should have mentioned that the Token carbon fibre bottle cage is strictly temporary until I get a more traditional-looking one!

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

Takes a few seconds of looking before you work out what's going on -- although the video does help! Not sure about the wooden bits. After all the effort of designing and building it, who settle for less than steel or aluminium?

First ride today. Gory details here.

    Today's Ride

Had an equipment fail to moan about on today's ride, but @wynne's accident has given me a bit of perspective. No injuries to me whatsoever, so just annoyance-level breakage to report. I finally got this Cinder Cone into rideable shape. Getting the XT V-brakes set up was more fiddly than I'd...

Good that you're not damaged too, but sympathies re the frame.

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

Pretty cool design -- I wonder how robust those steering linkages would prove to be in real-world urban situations . . . I can imagine bashing that on a kerb or bollard.

    Today's Ride

After another week of freezing winds, with gusts peaking at 100kmh last Tuesday, today was bright, sunny and clear, with a breeze that no longer froze any exposed extremities. It felt distinctly springlike. Set out on the '98 Explosif for a bit of a spin on local gravel roads and logging...

    My 1988 REI Ponderosa .

Nice looking bike! Not a brand I for one was familiar with.

Ah, hang on -- from our very own archive on this site: More detail on p.25 here.

    1988 Trek 900

According to this, the 900 was only built for one year -- so quite a rarity. They also made it in red. I can't find anything about the spec though.

    Kona Cinder Cone

Looks like it's in great condition -- nice find! I like the dark 'eggplant' purple of these.

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

Interesting design. Here's one built up, pic nicked from Reddit. (Might even be the same as the one on ebay, when you look at it)

    Today's Ride

It was back to the shed and the turbo trainer last week with gale-force winds and snow on the mountains nearby. Bizarre as I'd gone for a run in shorts for the first time in months on Monday. Let's hope this was winter's last gasp. It was still pretty windy today but I took off on the Airborne...

    1998 Kona Cinder Cone build

Fitting the XT V-brakes. These parallel-push jobbies are a bit more finicky than the Avids I'm used to . . . When mocking up the final bits yesterday, the Little Nick bars felt a bit wrong, so I've replaced them with some scruffy Easton Monkey Lites -- sadly, not silver in line with the...

Had to google that trail -- looks like a fantastic place for riding!

How do you build your vintage frames?

Yes -- not only would you immediately set about changing the bike as soon as you got it home (remove reflectors, fit fave seat, maybe remove shifter windows), but you'd keep on tinkering and adding bits as you went. Catalogue spec didn't survive for long in use :)
