    £50 MB Dronfield (Large) SE.London

These are easy to date, by the way - the first two numbers of the frame number are the year. This one looks to be around 1990ish.

    £50 MB Dronfield (Large) SE.London

Does this mean it's no longer in a lock-up in a dodgy part of SE London? Also, that paint is a lot more pink that I was expecting. MBs of this era did tend towards these somewhat interesting paintjobs.

    For Sale Weinmann Concave Rims - Black, 700c, 36h - £30 posted

Weinmann Concave Rims - 700c 36 hole - fairly unusual black versions. As the photos show, one rim is more glossy than the other - I don't think these were variations, it's just how they came from the factory, I think. I only noticed this when they were taken off the bike and I removed the hubs...

1980s chromed 'Bob Read Cycles' restomod

100% agree with you there. Even though it would generally be a bit silly to be riding anything retro if I was that worried about weight, I am still sometimes guilty of getting a bit hung up on it, probably, due to the amount of climbing I do. But there are plenty of other aspects of a bike that...

    Dawes 'Lightweight' Model? I.D Help

Actually, I just noticed the brakes are also slightly more modern (1996) replacements for the originals - but they will be better, so I'd keep those unless you really want it to be 100% catalogue correct. Also, it wasn't unusual with the bigger brands for the actual bikes that ended up in shops...

1980s chromed 'Bob Read Cycles' restomod

Cheers. Yes, I will keep the decals even if I’m not the biggest fan, as it doesn’t feel right to get rid of some of the history of the bike. I’ll take it for a short ride tomorrow and see how it feels.

    Dawes 'Lightweight' Model? I.D Help

It’s a Dawes Impulse. Here’s another example: Here’s the 1991 catalogue, when it had a slightly different paint job, so yours is a few years earlier, I think.

    Dawes 'Lightweight' Model? I.D Help

Welcome to the forum, that’s a great buy. It all looks original apart from the stem, seatpost, saddle and as you say, the front wheel. That saddle is very nice so a rather good upgrade from what the original would have been. The front wheel is a very common Mavic model, so you should be able to...

Thanks. Snazzy is what I aim for 😄.

Yeah, some SRAM Red would be lovely 😁. Now that really would be 💄🐷 territory.

1980s chromed 'Bob Read Cycles' restomod

It's now done, more or less (I need some black skewers, but that's about it). In the end both the stem and seatpost are ones I already had which I sprayed black. I realised that with the throw-forward of the shifters I ideally wanted quite a short stem to get a comfortable reach, so I settled...

Benson Veteran Cycle Club Rally 2025 photos

Great to see these. What for the love of God is the bike with the number 23 on it? That thing looks horrendous to ride, with your knees in front of the bars 😬

    the Animal

It’s funny how two British riders with very similar talents - Boardman and Obree, came along at the exact same time. Boardman is also very fair to Obree in his book, saying that although at the time they had a not particularly friendly rivalry, on reflection Obree was the real innovator and of...

    £50 MB Dronfield (Large) SE.London

Just in case you did want to split it, I’d be interested in the frameset, although you’d have to post it to me, so I can well understand you might not want the hassle of that even if you did split it.

    the Animal

I just finished reading his autobiography. It’s pretty good, for that sort of thing. He’s certainly honest about both his talents and his failings (like his rather quick realisation that he would never be able to succeed beyond time trials in the grand tours).

    Older seat bolt size query

I should add that I took the bike to my local bike co-op and having tried a few they had in stock, they reckoned it was somewhere between an M5 and M6, so probably imperial - hence my post here. But it does seem to take an M6, after all. I guess I'll try the right length regular M6 bolt with a...

    Older seat bolt size query

Yeah, I did kind of answer my own question, there, really... But actually, I'm wrong. I've found an M6 bolt (from an old stem) which does fit the thread, seemingly - but the head is too small. So it looks like I need a specific length M6 with a large head...

    Older seat bolt size query

I have a 1960s frame which doesn't take the usual (i.e more 'modern') seat bolt size, and it's also not an M5 or M6 size either, it seems somewhere in-between. Imperial, perhaps? The thread is on the left-hand side, and the right-side has quite a large opening for the bolt head to fit into...

Can’t really go wrong for £50. Too far from me, though, which is a good thing, really.

    Retromod J F Wilson

This went for £200, which I was actually a bit surprised by, given the market. I went to see it, and it was somewhat on the rough side. Nice wheels and of course the full 10 speed 105 groupset, though. I'd be very surprised if it doesn't get stripped for those parts.
