Mod retro conversion....the ultimate 80s trackie.

Have you tried a longer B screw? I'm running 11-40t routinely with old 8/9s derailleurs LX,XT,XTR.. I haven't run a 32/34t in years. My Zee is the DH version listed for 11-28t. runs 11-42t just fine with a longer screw. The FR 11-36t version runs 11-40 w/o the screw mod. Just didn't try the 42t...

Mod retro conversion....the ultimate 80s trackie.

You can go to 10s derailleur cable pull with SRAM shifter for 8,9s. The 10,11s SRAM and Shimano cable pull is the same. SRAM never changed. My bike is a lot different. But I've run up to 31t total capacity on an SS cage derailleur. Zee M640 in my case.

    Bikes and puddles

There's a sidewalk near here that goes under like that in the rainy season (which is about 9 months long). I would ride through like that. After about a week a layer of algae had formed on the concrete. No tire in the world would stick to it. Maybe snow spikes? Both tires slid out at once. It...

Parts That Weigh a Ton, But You Still Love 'em

SR Suntour NCX supension seatpost. I'm used to the Thudbuster LT which is no lightweight. I tried this because of the screw type adjuster. But the whole seat tube is filled with a steel spring and a metal plunger.. The Allen head adjuster plug is all the way at the bottom. Of course with a QR...

New Shimano 8 speed groupset with brifters.

Shimano prefers to sell groupsets to bicycle manufacturers. The spare parts market really doesn't interest them very much. There are bicycle builders in the UK, and almost none in the US except for higher end boutique brands. So in the UK this would be spares for existing bikes. In the US it...

New Shimano 8 speed groupset with brifters.

It should work with any Shimano 2:1 shifter. Revoshifters came in 8s. The drop bar brake/shifter is new for 8s. The one way clutch device makes it hard for slack to form in the chain over bumps. This coupled with a Narrow/Wide chain ring (1x only) keeps the chain from coming off. Most of these...

New Shimano 8 speed groupset with brifters.

Zero Friction Cycling found that Shimano parts are softer than SRAmM. Shimano chains last better with Shimano cassettes, and Sram with SRAM. The say SRAM chains will wear Shimano cassettes. Some of the factory Ebikes have gone to drivers as small as 9 teeth. I run a 50t ring and spend most of...

New Shimano 8 speed groupset with brifters.

The gear splits are similar in percentage as much as possible. Closer ones result in either double upshifts, or wasted time making extra shifts and cutting power to do so. The 3-8 gears are the same between to 11-40, and the 11-45t. With a 50t ring these are the road gears. Only the 2 lowest...

New Shimano 8 speed groupset with brifters.

The US Shimano site says it's NEW. I did see it offered at Rivendell, Hogwarts, and other UK,EU, and CA vendors. I had no idea it had been out for over a year. Most US vendors seem to be unaware of it. I have experience with the 11-40t version of this cassette. I also have experience with the...

New Shimano 8 speed groupset with brifters.

It's not available in the US yet. It seems we're actually more retro than you are. I'm trying to buy some for my Ebike.

New Shimano 8 speed groupset with brifters.

Shimano has a new budget 8 speed entry level groupset for gravel, trail, and light mtb/ touring use. The cassette is 11-45t 8 speed 11,13,15,18,22,27,35,45t. The derailleur is a GS cage Shadow derailleur (not Shadow+) but has a "clutch type" feature. I don't think there is a lever. There is also...

    Extreme Randonneuring going on.

Parts That Weigh a Ton, But You Still Love 'em

Saint M800 derailleur. The special 10mm Thru axle was only sold with the Saint hub. So NLA. ( the ones on Ebay are all too short) The Saint hub only takes the oversized spline Saint Centerlock rotor, also NLA. Rapid Rise, no 9 speed RR shifters. I own a few of these. They're cheap, and NOS...

Can Carbon rims be considered Retro?

My current thinking on this is. Rene Herse lightweight racing tires didn't exist back in the day. At least not in wide MTB sizes. Neither did Berd rope spokes. I'm looking at how fast weight weeny gravel racers are going on wide 700c, and I think 26" would be even weenier. So I'm going to do...
