Great appraisal @Rotorhead - thanks for taking the time to relay. Sounds like the bikes been used as intended with the rusty top tube. I get the feeling the owner doesnt know what he has and has acquired this bike (hopefully legally)..and would probably take £40.

You can consider a re-tap to metric (as @bikeworkshop says the thread is in all likelihood imperial). I retapped to 8mm in my case but I had to grind the cap head down on the metric bolt I had to fit in the cup on the R side of the cluster. Sorry, just read you lost the bolt...you kind of have...

Its a great machine alright but a tad small for a 6 footer I would have said.
