Replacing an old freewheel. What's the usual way to go about it?

The 2 notch tool came from the days you'd take your freewheel off every few months and grease the threads. The maintenance-free brigade all rode sturmey😉

    cantilevers, mini-v, anything else?

For ugly but effective braking, fit a disc front fork and disc setup Then a standard v brake with an avid travel agent on the back. You will be able to lock both wheels up in almost all situations, and have plenty of clearance. But if you want pretty, then live with the performance of shimano...

Replacing an old freewheel. What's the usual way to go about it?

You should also bolt the tool in with the wheel nut if you have enough axle. Sometimes I will move the axle across in the wheel so this can be done. QR is usually easier because you can just use a longer qr, like mtb. 2dog removers are horribly unreliable, and easily damage the extraction...

Replacing an old freewheel. What's the usual way to go about it?

Wrap the chain round the large freewheel sprocket. If it fits, it's ok. Big ring teeth should be ok. Trouser guard only necessary if you wear flares and no socks. If you do, there's a warm welcome awaiting in the BMX section😉

Replacing an old freewheel. What's the usual way to go about it?

Cassettes, especially the multi geared ones, wear a lot faster than an old 5 speed freewheel Those old fw teeth are so thick, and lacking any cutouts for indexing, they can almost last for ever. Certainly many, many chains. Their main problems aren't wear by the chain, but lack of...

    Index front shifters GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Is your derailleur compatible with both the chainring size and spacing and the shift lever model? Mismatched or worn out components are the most common cause of poor front shifting - even the wrong chainring (from the same groupset even) can ruin it, but it could be a bent or worn cage, damaged...

    Lightest Steel Frame?

Awful name😪 Most modern frame developments are for carbon fibre not steel, so once you build it up with internal cables, tapered fork, aero seatpost, through axles, flat-mount disc tabs, push-fit or os bb, it's starting to look a bit odd, but costing quite a bit more to make than a traditional...
