    Innovations that weren't...

Cannondales (im thinking of from the early days right up to early 2000s) are extremely prone to cracking at the bottom of the seat collar slot. Overextended or undersized seatposts makes almost a certainty. Larger riders increase the chance. But a cared- for frame with a well- fitting...

Modern standards - I need updating!

I'm happy to take up anyone's "rim brakes are better" challenge. Gentle, touring braking they are indeed the same. It's the high speed emergency stop that is radically different.

Ahhh the canti rocker. Got rid of everything that was wrong with a straddle hanger, And replaced it with something offering greater complexity and Friction. Great!

Mini-haul from Gloucester Pretty little bear Valley, early v-brake, 96? Don't we love Stx-rc and nice condition😍 Cannondale m500, 1993? One owner... Fantastic, popping paint, 😃 double-rocker! Rockers were so popular in 93, surprising really as they don't actually make any difference🤣

Modern standards - I need updating!

A disc brakes can apply a lot more braking force than a rim brake. This in turn applies more force at the crown race. You don't live where I live, for sure. Struggling to control speed on a long, greasy and narrow 20% gradient, and hearing the wear on your 30 year old shamals, and that's...

This is a renovation, but indeed Argos used to make a few frames, but not so much now, really because there's so much choice in steel available from factories at a fraction of the cost of UK hand-built. I just got in a custom argos early disc road bike - picture soon.

My colleague Andy who was there at the time thinks the guy on the right was called Sky and was a bit of a knob The middle guy also has a radio, but the others don't look like couriers Otherwise it looks like a youth style/ culture magazine shoot

Charming tourer awaiting some modernisation. We haven't identified the brand yet. Allez Dropouts, the unusual double eyes on the fork could have been prior to repaint

    Does anyone here build wheels?

I build wheels professionally, although my colleagues do most of them nowdays - I just stand at the counter talking🤣 Or sit at a computer doing "paperwork"🙄 We charge £50 labour as a rule. If you're interested diy is quite straightforward, especially front. There are a series of slightly...

Is it Camden Town? Islington? 1988? The guy on the right looks vaguely familiar. I was a motorcycle courier but some of my housemates were cycle couriers - they used to hang out waiting for jobs. I'll ask my friend Paul if he recognises them - lots of mfx couriers then

    Opinion on Joytech Hubs

Those hubs suit the rims, and are original and working. I doubt you'll wear them out if you service them. Otherwise stx or stx rc are pretty and last, as long as they are kept away from salt - if that's the right period

So my earlier thread / too many injuries enough now - really bad news and it feels they delayed it…cynical

There's a ghoulish element of risk-expectation in motor racing too - the organisers are chasing thrills that are expensive for the participants

    Wanted 650b rim brake wheelset

650b is 12mm bigger, so you need that extra height clearance, and ability to raise the brake blocks. Tyre width will be dependent on rim width. 650b rimbrake tends to be catalogue quality, as discs were well established when the 27 five style got going.

ebay found a new way to screw with buyers

The number of auctions i have won on exactly my highest bid amount Is statistically improbable. I can't find consistent evidence of shill bidding, although I'm sure mates bid high, seller sees your highest bid, mate withdraws and bids you up safely. Withdrawing isn't allowed in the last 24hr...

So my earlier thread / too many injuries enough now - really bad news and it feels they delayed it…cynical

But the competition moves into more and more dangerous territory, to attract viewers, to attract advertising money, to make the rich and comfortable brand owners feel the thrills. When do you get off, abandon your career, sponsorship, lifestyle? It's like doping in the tour again. You could...
