All the Astro's I've seen have been varnished. Refinished a couple with oil based varnish too and it seems a very good match.

I have some Manitou's similar to these on a bike and like you I initially thought they might not be up to the job - I'm glad to be wrong once again as they ride really well with minimum faff. Sounds a great bike, looking forward to some pics!

Not familiar with strip down of those pedals - could you disassemble in situ and then get the pedal flats into a vice? Go on, you know you don't really want to give up! 💪

Action shot... Is the spider correctly orientated to the crank? I can't remember whether this matters.

Mine is a LifeLine Bottom Bracket Tool 8 Prong I got cheap from chain reaction. Can find similar on fleabay for about £6 posted.

Makes me mad and sad in equal measure.

Some will know this and others might not be interested but the majority of thermal printers use BPA in the paper. I'm sure toner and inks contain nasties but BPA is one I prefer to avoid where possible. Apologies the for the diversion.
