    Dreams do come true….Whyte PRST1.

The first proper bike I spent money on was in 1998, I bought a Marin Mount Vision and still have it to this day. I was a frequent visitor to Denton’s Cycles in Newcastle (sadly long gone) where I bought it, and I remember being offered a test ride of a Whyte PRST1 when they first came out. I was...

    Orbit Tandem

I’ve refurbished all sorts of bikes over the last 12 years or so, but this just fell into my garage over Christmas (you know how it is). I was hoping there might be some tandem or Orbit experts about who might be able to identify which model I have? Looking on the t’interweb she seems an...

    Shimano 5600 name plates.

I’ve recently picked up lovely Salsa CX bike with Shimano 5600 shifters. It’s a common problem with them I guess, but the name plates are scuffed and scratched. They work brilliantly and I’m reluctant to swap them out. Looks like they’re like hens teeth to buy - has anyone got a secret stash? Or...

    Campag 8/9 speed compatibility

I picked up a lovely Joe Waugh recently, It’s all old skool Campag 8 speed. I need to fit a triple chainset as the current gearing is way too much for my old legs. Question is, will a pre 2000 9 speed Veloce rear derailleur work with 8 speed Chorus shifters on an 8 speed cassette? I have a...

Sun Tour Cyclone GT rear derailleur

Lovely condition Sun Tour Cyclone GT rear mech from around 1977. Don’t think it’s been used much, if at all. The pulley wheels are original and the spring is strong. All adjustment screws move freely. Also includes the hanger if your frame needs it. £50 posted.

Getting a bike posted/delivered in one piece.

I’m sure there used to be a whole thread on Retrobike about the best companies to use for posting/couriering a bike but I’ll be buggered if I can find it! Anyone got the link? Or better still, the cheapest most reliable company to use?

    Campagnolo Rear Derailleur.

Just a quickie, I’m sure someone will know! Can anyone tell me from which series this derailleur is from? And roughly which year? Thanks in advance.

    Lava Dome Joe Murray

I work for a bike charity which recycles old donated bikes. Sometimes something nice gets left on our forecourt. This beauty arrived this morning, I must admit I went a bit misty-eyed as I always wanted one back in my youth. She’ll take a bit of elbow grease and autosol but most of it’s...

    Campagnolo Strada

I’ve recently bought a lovely Joe Waugh and it’s come with some lovely Campag components. The 53/42 chainset is a total leg-killer and caused great anguish on a recent hilly ride. It’s stamped 170 Strada 0. The 0 is in a circle. Does this mean it was manufactured in 1980? Any help identifying...

    Dawes Galaxy Tour 531

The last thing I needed was another touring bike and one was dangled into my lap. I couldn't say no. It was given to me by a good friend, with a bag full of parts in return for a favour, she cost me nothing and I needed a lockdown challenge so... She's a Dawes Galaxy Tour with a 531 frame. I...

    H Rensch pre-war Tandem?

I work for a charity who refurbish donated bikes. We get all sorts, but we picked this beauty up this morning, I wondered if anyone knew anything about it? It’s branded H Rensch, who I believe stopped using that name during WW2 because it sounded a bit too German - became Paris Cycles after...

    Corratec Superbow

I’ve wanted one of these Superbow’s for ages. I ‘ummed and ahhed’ about buying one of these as far back as 1998. I like anything that’s slightly out of the normal and this top tube is just lovely. I managed to snaffle this frame on Fleabay for a measly £30, and although it’s a more recent...

    GT Timberline

I work for a charity that takes in old bikes, usually donated by members of the public, and refurbishes them back into something rideable, rather than sending them to the tip. This came in today, not a particularly great spec, but all totally original, and as I whizzed around the car park, it...

Singing the praises of a vintage Marin.

I’ve just returned from completing a rather gruelling trip over the weekend and wanted to sing the praises of my Marin Mount Vision which performed superbly throughout. We usually follow the TDF around for a week in July but for a change we decided something a big nearer to home, The Sandstone...

    Veloce, Thomson & 105

A few bits and pieces that were bought for projects that never came to fruition or just got dumped! Prices include postage and PayPal is fine if you pay the fees. Veloce 10 speed right hand shifter with gear cable. Very slight mark to the rubber hood (see pic) but it’s lovely and crisp in the...

A good day in the office.

I volunteer at a bike workshop where we refurbish donated bikes. Sometimes you get lucky! Yesterday, bloke walks in with a 1988 Rockhopper and a 1989 Kona Explosif. Both virtually with the original spec. The Kona is beautiful to ride but alas it’s too small and Mrs M won’t allow anymore vintage...

    Rear shock service?

Where’s a reasonable place to have a vintage Fox Float R serviced? I’ve replaced the bushes myself so I don’t need those, and yet the going rate seems to be around £80. Apart from doing it myself (never done it before) where can I get it serviced more reasonably? Or should I just buy a new...

    Marin Jersey

Marin Jersey. I always wanted one of these to go with my vintage Mount Vision 98 but alas I don’t have my 98 figure anymore. I think this is from 1998 and looks like the one Paul Lasenby wore (see pic) It’s made by Pearl Izumi and looks stunning. I don’t think it’s ever been worn outdoors...

Marin, De Rosa & T Mobile Jerseys.

I seem to make a career out of buying jerseys that will never fit. Each of the following were bought as ‘used’ but they’ve been in wardrobe for far too long and I’ll never lose enough weight to squeeze into them. In any case, I need to fund this years Sandstone Way adventure, So here goes...
