Why is it so hard to find info on early Jamis bikes. I have picked up a very little use 1988 Jamis Diablo in incredible original condition, spec and amazing condition for a 26 year old bike. I have not seen another like it. I really want to find out info on range, models etc from back then but can find nothing in the archives. Did anyone work and know these early bikes? Thanks.
The reason that there's so little info out there about the brand is that it wasn't a brand that was big in the UK bitd.
I'm not sure how they were distibuted throught the rest of the country, but in Dorset they were sold through Viceroy.
I'd never heard of the brand when I first stumbled across them in 1989.
I had saved up a few hundred quid and was on the lookout for a new bike.
My mate had a Rockhopper Comp and I really wanted something on par with that.
My Dad suggested a trip to Viceroy, and I laughed at him. We went anyway and, tucked away at the back of their showroom, I spotted a 1988 Dakota.
It was bright red had a full MT60 groupset and the most gorgeous bronze ano RM20 rims. I was smitten!
My Dad, being a Dad, did a deal for cash with the salesman and my love affair with all things Jamis started.
My current collection includes....
I also have another 1988 Dakota frame and forks. A previous owner had removed the stay bridges on this though so I'm planning to make some personal modifications to get this rideable again
The frame will be going for blasting before I do anything so I'll update this with pics of exactly how they faux brazed some of the joints.
I also had a 1994 Jamis Dragon, but it was tad too small for me so I sold it on. I'd love to find another in the right size.
Here's my 1988 Jamis Diablo. Its in amazing condition for its age and original. Tange Double Butted Seamles tubing, according to the sticker. Looking at the wear, it has hardly been used, just bears a couple of paint chips here and there. Original Exage Mountain M450 groupset. Even the saddle is unmarked. Bargain buy of Ebay for £50! Very chuffed! Too scared to use it!
