Hey all - Newbie alert ;)

had major surgery over new-year (ouch!)

looking to build my bike (again) to facilitate fitness levels etc

Really lost touch - been 10 years out the saddle!

Have my IFT frame 17.5" '96 issue with original Dia-Tech cups in place...

Can anyone tell me if i'll need to push these off and fit new ones/new head set or can i just get any old 1 1/8th races and bung 'em on?

And will it all compress together ok without the OE diatech cable hanger/thingy?!

Thanks in advance,

Andy

If you're replacing the headset then I would not mix and match cups and races from different makes/models. Inexpensive headsets can be easily picked up at your LBS and they would be happy to put them on, adjust the fork, etc etc for a few quid.

Just be very very careful if you have a new headset fitted ...make sure it isnt a really tight fitting one as the headtubes on the ift are very thin and have a habit of cracking....I know from experience so go easy......I would be inclined to fit new loose balls to the headset you have fitted.....and to not disturb the cups....

If you need parts put a wanted ad up on here in the wanted section and some one will have some parts....

Oh yeah....welcome to the money pit

Cheers folks.

Yeah, i thought that the cups could/should stay - still have a niggling suspicion/paranoia that the Dia-tech ahead NEEDS the OE clamp/hanger??

:)

any ideas on the decomposition of the frame finish?
It's like a thousand baby slugs have crawled all over my beatiful burnish :'(
and yeah - there goes the neighbourhood $$$$$$$$$$$

I think you can dispose of that and fit a couple of spacers and a use a stem with a hanger built in...... :?

It's already disposed of :/ that's the issue!

Yeah, i'll be at the mercy of the McDonald boys here in Edinburgh.
See what they have lying around to get this front-end solid.

Gonna be running V's instead of the canti's - wish i still had the original running gear/fork - alas, its gone to that great single-track in the sky.

Will let ya know how i get on, thanks for taking time out to get back to me
appreciated ;)

If it's 1 & 1/8", I've got a bag of spares from a used diatech headset including the conical clamp thing. Came out of my 1996 Team Marin. Would possibly save having to knock out the old cups?

Let me know if it would be of use!

:)
Thanks!
Think we've established that it wont matter?
however could take them if no longer needed, to be on the safe side?

All i have are the cups - so anything else would be really good.

Are these headsets possibly the worst invention ever??!

*edit

Just been out to the shed; upon further inspection the top cup has alot of wear on the front side (due to crash <not by me!> and the headset working loose?) but not on the frame side... :? what to do, what to do.

PM'd about the spares!
