I'm looking for a 9 speed cassette with 11-36 ratio. Anyone got anything surplus to requirements?

not classic or top quality, but both do the job
Sunrace is offering 11-40 or 11-46
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002931996497.html?or you can look for a CS-HG400 Shimano 11-36 (it was just quite cheaper or easier to get one before Corona :()

I do run successfully even old stuff from early 90ties like XTII 735 derailleur with 11-36, also LX 550 etc. do serve 36 at max, if you adjust the b-screw and with short chain and single chainring at the front.
For bigger ones you either have to use a roadlink adapater, but i wouldn't recommend this as it isn't operating precisely then the smaller sprockets, or simply a rather new rear mech (which than also has daming to effectly avoid chainsucks). Usually the list below is giving a bit of help which combinations work.
Also for SRAM X9 type2.1 and to have positive experience with 11-40 in a 9 speed set-up.

Thanks for that :) Actually a 36T big cog on the back with a 30T chainring gives a slightly lower gear that my normal retro 3x7 set-up so I think that would be fine

Agree, especially with just a 30T chain ring a 36T cog should be big enough to have a grany for some steam uphills.

On the other side, 30T in the front and 11T cog at the back doesn't support a good vmax.

Usually i do recommend to use a calculater like Ritzelrechner
http://www.ritzelrechner.de/?GR=DER...RZ2=11,13,15,17,19,21,24,28,32,36,42&UF2=1900and to compare a proven set-up with a planned one upfront, just to see differences.
The screenshot below is comparing a 3x7, 24,36,46 / 13-30 with a 30T chainring / 11-36 at a cadence of 80 for a 26" bike.
As you see, distribution of speeds works good for lower speeds, but the higher range is pretty limited.

Are you sure this isn't turning to slow and you'll be only using right cogs mostly?

I typcial use for mix mode conditions a single 38T in the front at 26" MTBs and 11-36 cassette. With smaller chain ring i was missing a lot a choice for higher speeds.
Sorry for the long feedback, it's of course your decision and you only have asked for a cassette, not a full brain wash 🤔

I like all the info and 1x is quite a new thing for me. This will be for my 12 year old and will be for a mixture of road and off-road. I want to make sure he has a nice low gear for off-road riding though it will probably be used more on the road, but only as a mode of transport around our village. I could maybe go up to a 32T up front, with a 36T at the back, but any bigger and I feel it might make things more difficult sometimes off road. I don't mind if he spins out on the road sometimes :)

ah, great, for a kids bike.
That's actually my favorite target group. After running out of excuses for building more and more bike for myself, i've started to look for good reasons to build bikes, and my kids and kids of my friends are growing a lot and need regularly new bikes ;)

But with that i also wouldn't use a 38T chainring, but pretty smaller.

Just a few pictures or drive trains of a few kids bikes i have build in 2021 already for 10-13 year olds:

Cube with Islabikes 150mm 32T cranks and XT750 with 9 speed 11-36
cube 14 antrieb.jpg
Trek with Samox 32T and X9 2.1 with 10 speed 11-40

Brodie with shortened Sugino, with 34T chainring and X9, 9 speed 11-36

I would recommend to use 32T chainring in the front (bare in mind, you need usually for a rider smaller than 160cm also a crank shorter than 170mm!) and 9speed 11-36 rear. Ideally try to re-use old own stuff or second hand equipment.
That works, also at mixed conditions, just not for longer or steep uphills.
If you are realizing that's too limited, you could still go for the 10 or 11 speed 11-42 or similar set-up by replacing rear mech, trigger and cassette with recent Deore or SLX parts and a sunrace or similar cassette.

Thanks for that. I think I will look for an 11-36 then. Title changed :)
