Hi all...

I’m doing a build on a 95 clockwork at mo (have ongoing thread in appropriate section).

I always fit new headsets when doing a full strip. Especially after frame has been painted/powdercoated.

Anyway, I’m just wondering if anyone has advice on a decent 1 inch threaded headset (sub £30) as I’m really undecided as to whether to persevere with my STX standard one and give it s service or for s more modern one which may give more longevity. The STX has sealed cartridges which you can pop open and change balls/regrease but I can’t see anywhere that stocks the whole sealed races which would be my perfect solution.

There’s a few modern ones on the market but not lots and I’m dubious over what’s good. Anyone can advise on a decent one to go for if I do replace the whole thing?

Views please...

Shimano discontinued the cartridges, which is a total pain.

My go-to ones are Tange Levin or (the best) a Campagnolo Record road headset, which is still made.

Re:

My other line of enquiry is to measure the Shimano sealed bearing races and see if any of the online bearing companies do them as modern sealed units should they be an industry standard size....
I doubt they will be tho....

Re:

Thank you. That’s a great site. Rang them tho and they confirmed that they don’t do anything that size. It appears that Shimano used these type of race (conventional bearing race housed in its own casing) assay was the predecessor to industry standard sealed bearings.

At least I’ve explored that avenue. I could replace and grease the bearings within the race and I’m sure it will work ok but torn as to whether just to fit a whole new headset. Torn between originality or functionality on a now factory fresh frame.

Heading towards functionality at mo as it’s not like the clockwork was a Uber rare unicorn bike

Cheers

Yeah thought that might be the case tbh we find a lot of manufacturers are making bespoke bearings for their kit now! worth a try tho like you said!

Tange makes classic looking silver & black ones, alloy cups & cartridge bearings inside tem. Got mine for 25 EUR a year ago. Cheap, light, nice, they"re surely worth a try!
