best retro mountain bike rim and why...

I found Mavic 117's to be pretty bombproof. Got a pair in CD guise on my orange, would love the ceramic versions.

In the early days, the Araya 7X and Ukai 'box' rims are my favourites, both dependable and artefacts of their time. Around the turn of the 1990s I like Araya RM17 hard anodised, beautifully finished, reasonably light, very robust; if let down a little by their narrow width. A lot of them still getting around. Up into the later part of the 'retro' era as defined by the page I was doing more gravity oriented riding and my favourite rim was the Mavic 121 SUP CD Ceramic, bombproof rim, nice wide tyre bed (for reasonably weighted rims of the era) and that badass grey/black finish.

Re:

Campag Stheno are my faves; wider and a tiny bit heavier than Ateks but still very light at around 400g (some weigh under). Really strong and stiff too. The only downside is their relatively thin sidewalls, but I can't say I've noticed them wearing out prematurely.
All Campag rims are good and are surprisingly strong for their weight.

Re:

^^ absolutely. And can take a little while for the brake block to conform to that wonderful concave contour.
Variety of surface finishes too, which look great. And don't forget, they are really easy to get tyres on and off.

I would have to stave off the 231, as in CD version the ano takes an age to wear off, and until then braking is pap.
The joins aren't great either, both in roundness and the ridge.
220 UB and the like address the sidewall issue with the machining (no step, no ano to wear off), but still often have a 'hop' at the joinn.

So, my actual recommendation is the Sun Zero degree lite/ Zero degree XC. (440g/420g). Pretty good weight, but also fully eyeletted (unlike the campy), you can get tyres on and off (like the campy), machined sidewall (like the Mavic UB), and ROUND (unlike the mavic). Oh, and the Ano is great. And if you hunt around there were also a few batches of pretty colours. And there was even a Tungsten Carbide Coat if you want a ceramic version.

Depends what you want them for.... Mavic 217 have always been good looking, reasonably light, double eyeletted and strong. All for a reasonable price.

I've never done DH, but am now using D521 rims on my Yates 26" tourer, yet to be properly tested but they've always had a good reputation I think
