Bomber Z2 BAM vs. Light

Is there much difference between a Marzocchi Bomber Z2 BAM and a Z2 Light, internally or externally, weight, travel, intended use etc?
I know very little about these as I was always put off by how heavy they were, despite them being a great fork by all accounts

I have a Z3 Light, though it is anything but! Having a steel steerer tube didn't help, so I replaced it with a homemade version, basically a cut section of a 28mm alloy seat post...

As BAM stands for Bomber Aerospace Material, I'm guessing the Z2 BAM version is slightly lighter than the so-called Z2 'light'. I'm not sure if there's any difference internally. Don't let the weight put you off though, the Z-series are fantastic performers.

BAM is just a name for a type of aluminium alloy, it tends to refered to the brace style by people.
All Bombers use BAM.

Depends which z2 and which Light. I don't think there is as Z2 Light just the Z3.

But Z2 is a higher in the range more adjustable model of the Z3.

Difference between Z3 Light and Z3 Alloy I don't know, no catalogues have been scanned and uploaded.
Probably in the CNC machining of the brace and style of crown

Not to be confused with any thing with Fly in the name... Like flylight.

I always assumed that the 'light' model was light on features and was the base model and the 'alloy' had an alloy steerer.
I have a set of Z3 Lights on the Wifes GT and while not light they are a decent fork.
The Z2 Atoms I have don't have the vestigial disc mount and an alloy steerer and I assumed that they would have been quite high up the Z2 range.

It doesn't of course help that we're in the pre 98 section when light, alloy etc where 1998 forks.

Pretty much all bombers should never be in this section ;-). Apart from the very first of them.

Z3 light had the alloy steerer and bam brace (arch as they called it) no damping control. I.e. no allen screws in the black damper bit at the bottom as was missing from Z3 compared to Z2.

The hydra... Was this the alloy? Had a steel butted steerer and plain alumimium brace with no holes in it made from plain old 60xx aluminium.

Should add for 1999... Getting even moderner..

The Z2 range.
BAM was top with 80mm travel
Atom same but shorter travel
Alloy same as atom but use basic alloy lowers(sliders) not the BAM ones.

Z3 Light and alloy steerer - may have been different on OEM spec ones, but the set that came on my '98 Kilauea, and the '99 set I have both had steel steerers. '98's long since departed, but my '99's now sport an alloy steerer (needed a longer one than they arrived with from ebay).

The manual states it was an option on the 1 1/8th thread less, neither of the sets I have worked with had an alloy steerer either, but they may have had the threaded part cut off.
