Chain compatibility IG, SG, HG???

Ok in a bid to get my bikes sorted I've been playing musical chains. Now my question is;

What is the rule of thumb for chain type and compatibility with Cranksets, Cassettes etc, ie HG, SG, IG ? Currently running a IG Chain on SG Chainring with no problems? But wondering if I renew chain or change chainring will that have an impact?

Now, before this thread potentially gets all messy, you can use pretty much what you like. Even a 9spd chain will integrate nicely with 7 or 8 spd systems.

As for rings, as long as the spacing between the rings is near enough correct, that will integrate too.

My favourite example was my 2007 Dawes Sardar with 1987 Deore MT60 series mechs. It all worked and integrated quite happily 6spd with 9spd, chain and all.

IG chain is really just for IG chainrings.
