I picked up a decent condition set of old red label GP4 rims today from a friend, destined for my batavus build. They're pretty decent condition, but some of the spoke eyelets have some rusting on the outside (only surface rust, they're fine on the inside). what's the best way to clean the rust off without damaging the CD coating?

thanks!

Re:

hi foz,
to get into those sort of places i use an old toothbrush with some autosol or t cut. usually gives good results. i was doing this yesterday on the old rudge aero special i picked up last weekend. there is a post on here about it with pics if you get chance to take a look :xmas-big-grin:

Dishmatic and Fairy liquid sorted this out on my Open 4 CD's.

It was the 'non scratch' pad on the end. Lots and lots of soap stopped the scourer scratching the sutface but it brought the eyelets up a treat!

Re:

Strong bamboo toothpicks are ideal to clean around the eyelet because of their strength.

Best way is like others have said... strip the wheel down.

After you've got the eyelets bright & shiny you need to protect them from further rusting!
I've used Humbrol Clear Enamel on the eyelets but you've got to be patient with the painting.

Re:

I have done the same with my GP4s. I used rust killer which turned them black/blue. Looks quite nice.

Thanks for the tips. The rims aren't built into wheels, yet. I want to remove the rust but without affecting the CD coating. Will have a go sometime over the weekend, xmas permitting
