Dawes Double Edge Mountain Bike (tandem!)

Dave W

Retro Newbie
Got one of these in my Garage doing nothing. Bought new about twenty years ago rode it for a couple of months before the wife got pregnant

Purple forks and grey sort of colour frame. The drivetrain is original and the original chain shows no wear at all.
Drag brake was removed to prevent the wife squeezing it on and cantilever brakes were replaced with XT V brakes. Still got the drag brake. The frame however has been rubbed where other bikes are piled against it and has a couple of dents on the downtube from a kiddy seat so a respray wouldn't go amiss.
We got it out of hibernation last year and had such a blast we bought another road tandem. If anyone is interested I'm in Trowbridge Wilts if you fancy a look. £275

Good!

Can you give me some sizing info e.g. seat tube lengths and top tubes, or if it's a L/M or something like that?
What is the original drive train, and can you confirm the year of purchase.

A couple of pics of the damage wouldn't go amiss either!

Tandeming is a blast -we've a great road tandem, but now want something we can take off road - this may suit the bill....
And we also had a tandem the Mrs got pregnant - but we carried on and need up with two -and a child on the back of both. Now we're free (ish) and able to ride a lot more, and a lot further. Though we now hav a grandson who has been in a seat on the back of the road tandem!

Re:

Size was probably small at the back and medium on the front. I'm 5' 10 the wife 5'2. Don't think the front would take anyone taller than that. Drivetrain is all Stronglite with shimano deore shifters. It has an arai drum brake that was never used (somewhere in my toolbox). Brakes were upgraded from callipers to shimano xt v brakes. Rear seat tube was replaced because I cut the original down years ago but then wife decided she wanted it a lot higher when we dusted it off last year. Brand new rim on the back wheel. Try and get some photo's later. Year of purchase was around 1990 I would guess.

Dave,
Thanks for your help, but looking into this, it's going to be too small for us as a team. We really need the 21"/17" versions - I think yours must be a 19"/15"

Shame, as it's a bit of a bargain imho

regards
