OK so I'm quite old so i should prob know this but back in the early 90's I can only seem to remember people including myself having the std type pedals with toeclips or SPD's so when exactly did flat BMX type pedals like the wellgo's, DMR's first appear on MTB's? I ask because that is my pedal of choice now but what about my 92 Orange Elite, could i get away with some wellgo's on that or is there a more suitably aged pedal I should source?

Thanks

I'm no expert but i remember seeing a lot of those big TIOGA "slant paralelogram" platform pedals on stuff . I might have a pair in the garage somewhere... I was running tiny single sided Tioga surefoots at the time, the two tabs that stuck out the bottom to help flip them over were lethal for the shins

on reflection, maybe my times are a little wrong its all a blur, it was a long time ago, maybe it was late eighties .. but i did use earlier tioga surefoots and by "slant parallelogram" (yes i now remember what the term relates to) I mean something akin to below. and yes I do have a pair in the garage..

The original DX was a BMX pedal that folk used to transfer over to MTB's BITD think they were late 80's and were used pretty much from the word go by some....

I had Oddyssey Shark Bites on my 92 Shogun Trail Breaker whenever I was feeling like SPD's were too restrictive....

The DMR's V8 and V12 were mid 90's and copied the DX pretty closely

for my money the DH world went mad for Flats just before Shimano brought out the 636 DX red SPD / Flat combo and those were again mid 90's...

I used to have a load of MBUKs from the early 90s, circa 92-94 and every issue seemed to have something about running BMX pedals and wearing Vans in it. So I reckon you can get away with flat pedals on your bike.

Thanks guy's, I reckon some flat black pedals is the way to go then and shouldn't look out of place:D

See the bike in my sigs, both are on large flatties, one V8's the other Outland. Neither look that bad IMO. I used clips and straps when doing the roadie thing was in and they were OK and then SPD's but both were too restrictive IMO.
If Money permitted and I could find them both bikes would use the original Shimano beartrap XT's (not the cut away cages, the full size ones)

Carl.
