Geax Tyres for a tenner

Longevity may be an issue. Got a new secondhand bike with Geax Mezcalls on it last week. It had hardly been used and the tyres still had the little hairs on. After about 50 miles on/off road on it - there's a distinctive bald patch on one area of the rear tyre (and I don't remember skidding on them).

thanks for the heads up greenkat, 50 miles is not much!

anyone else had similar issues?

I plumped for the white Saguaro in the end, will share my experiences with them - for now they are boxed up as spares for the ancient Contis fitted to my 853 back in the 90's. We go to Scotland soon for a biking holiday and I don't want to end up miles from anywhere without a spare pair of tyres if one of my Conti side walls give up

Based my purchase decision on these reviews and wear doesn't seem an issue for Saguaros:

the prices have doubled recently.
The whole range where £5 a month or so back, then they went to 2 for £10, then back down to £5, and they've been back up at £10 for one for a few weeks now.
I see the TNTs are back at £5.

I'm waiting till they are all back at £5 ;-)

ooh thanks fluffy chicken, that's worth keeping an eye on

the Saguaro pair I got were a "distress" purchase as I needed something in case I got to Scotland and my old tyres gave up (I am recommissioning the bike after about 10 years unused) so don't mind £20

suspect the TNTs are cheaper as no one really wants them, if on-one need the space for new stock they will probably push them out super cheap - I toyed with the idea but have heard too many horror stories about tight fitment

TNTs are the Tubeless heavier ones.

Tenner each is still a bargain though.
My belief is they are flogging the old stock as the new ones are Vittoria branded as they've jumped to the mother company name now.

Re:

I bought 2 sets the other month. some Goma's which I'm using now and finding them much better than the previous Schwalbe Smart Sams for the type of riding I do on my modern bike, and some Lobo Loco's for future use.

You're right the prices have gone up since I bought the tyres, still a bloody bargain at £9.99 a tyre though! especially when you consider their RRP!

I've used Geax Barro Mud in the past on a xc bike and liked them a lot.

Thinking of buying more now...

Geax are the MTB brand of Vittoria who make really nice road tyres. I've got several sets over the years. Revert were a brilliant semi-slick. The Gato I put on my wife's bike seem to have lasted and be puncture-resistant even though they are very light. I've bought another pair to replace my Rocket Rons which are too fragile.

So the moment I'd been dreading happened yesterday, one of the Mezcalls TNTs on my bike got a puncture. I'd heard they were a tight fit, but it was actually impossible to even get a tyre lever between the rim and the tyre. Plus one side appeared to be glued on. I eventually decided to cut the tyre off. For some reason, despite using tubes - the previous owner had glued the tyre on one side.

This is on Mavic Crossland UST rims btw.

I then figured I'd replace the front as well. Thankfully that succumbed to the old squeeze the beads of the tyre together really hard so they fall into the narrow well on these rims. It was very straightforward getting a lever under it then although there were plenty of tooling marks on the bead of the tyre where the previous owner had obviously struggled.

I guess the moral of the story is that if you get the TNT versions, and you find them tight - then this video will be very helpful:
