Hawk mtb

Haddock

Retro Newbie
Hi, my first post on here, i'm just about to get my fathers old steel Hawk mountain bike. Its about 18 years old and pretty much in as new condition. I dont think they were a 'serious' off road bike more a budget ATB. The old man says its British made, in Cradely Heath to be precise - does anyone know anything about this brand?

I'm quite excited about getting an old steel bike for the local BW's. :)

Hello and welcome to Retrobike :)

Never heard of your bike so can't help there unfortunately but where abouts in the East Riding are you?
I live near North Cave if you know it and get out most Sunday's often with the North Lincs lads if you fancy joining us sometime?

Woolies used to sell Hawk Cycles.....I had a racer when I was at school...not sure about MTB's though.

I had a hawk bike from Woolies. It was what we would call a hybrid now. Looked like a racer but without the dropped handlebars. It was greeny brown in colour, came with a rack on the back and weigh a ton!

Served its purpose though and introduced me into the art of bike maintenance

Hawk Cycles is down the road from me in Cradley.

To be brutally honest they've never made the best of bikes at any level, they are a bit of a budget brand as you say yourself.

Don't know exactly how long they've been around but I had my first BMX frame from their factory shop about 26 years ago. To their credit I never managed to break it in the 5 years abuse I gave it.

Cheers for the replies, i've just picked the bike up this evening, its pretty budget but good for a laugh - i'm just regretting getting rid of my Gary Fisher Celerity that I bought new when I was 16, and fitted with a Girvin flex stem - traded the bike in for peanuts against a full susser a few years back, sheer madness!

Chrisv40 - I'm in Hessle, would enjoy to meet up one sunday, you normally do on road of off?

I trhink it's German brand
Hawk had two products lines: MTB for good quality bikes and Classic Line for budget and city bikes They even print two separatly catalogues every year
Here You'll find 97, 98 and 99 catalogues (probably there's no Yours bike, but You'll see models hierarchy and You'll know where it should be)
My scans shows both catalogue from same Year in one PDF

Hawk are a British brand that are down there with Apollo making cheapo gas pipe specials and selling them via catalogues and a chain of stores in the Midlands and North of England.

They did make a GTesque triple triangle bike like apollo did and one of their enduring mtb models is the Trakatak. Currently they also market a pennyfarthing but as the large wheel is 700c, top speed is unlikely to be above walking pace

They also had a reasonable alternative to the Raleigh Chopper BITD

Ben (Fluffychicken) lives in Anlaby so you are pretty local to all of us, keep an eye on the North East and Lincs area forums for ride details
