Headset with 28mm stack height...

BoyBurning

Karma King
Bontrager Fan
1.125" threaded...

What are my options?

I used to have a wonderful spreadsheet with SHs for most headsets, but can't find the file for some reason...

Was planning on using M900, but at 34 odd mm it's too high.

After good quality obviously, and pretty much 28 on the nose - maybe a couple mm less if I can lose the compression washer...

Head tube = 115mm...

Steerer = 143mm...

Me = currently a little stuck...

Cheers in advance,
BB

You can use the lower half from a modern Crank Brothers (22mm? from memory) 1 1/8 aheadset. Maybe even the top half if you can find a lock-ring that will work with it!

Thinking about it I think the whole headset would work if you could use something like a bolted lockring.

oh you could remove the top cap...the lock washer would hold things in place.use a big o ring to seal between the stem and headset...works for me...

Pretty much not going to get one without some imagination, then it'll be a compromise.

Most low stack quality ahead are around 28mm then you have to add the spanner part and the locknut be as well, even if it's a bolt clamp down type.

New forks or steerer.

Can't you do it with just a lockring that has a bolt through it that's used to tightened it as per my first post? I'm not sure what they're called but some Kona headsets had them, Mavic has a similar idea and grey components used to sell one.

The 'locknut part' still add extra height to them, they are just a replacement for the top lock nut. What you do and the top part, usually the first spanner section still needs to be there.

Mavic stack height (wrt steerer, not external) was higher even on it's lower stack position and the Control Centre/Impact was still quite tall. The Gorrilla nut and Growler still replaced the top locknut. (I don't know the greys one)
The Lower locknut is the race or bearing holder so needs to be there.
Even King Grip Nut is at the ~34mm low stack threaded height.

There are probably some combinations you could bodge something up but that doesn't fit the good quality aspect (XTR is the standard given).

I think DiaComp did make a 1" at just under 30mm using the threadless principle, threadhead or something. A search on that would be needed but still probably a fraction to tall. I do not know anything about them.

What I meant was to use a modern aheadset like this:

Which has a stack height of 21mm, then use one of these on top of the aheadset:

Although there might be a bit of play where the threaded part of the steerer is against the lock ring from the aheadset.

The grey imports one I had was around 8mm high, which makes a total of 29mm.
