Hi All,

Looking for Idea's for fitting a crown race (1 1/4) onto a fork without the proper tool.
Want to do a nice job so using the screwdriver method is out.

Cheers

See if a piece of plastic plumbing pipe will fit over, use the proper installation tool or a hammer and a block of wood. All worked ok for me. :-)

chunk of decent hardwood and a hammer does the trick (took one off myself yesterday with a lump of oak)

fitting should be easier than removal as your not working against 18 years of grime holding it in!

Large spanner, use the ring end rather than the open end and gently tap with a hammer.

If anyone has a way of removing one without the correct tool or damaging the race and fork, feel free to enlighten us.

plumbers pipe with a cap on one end.

I use a tube from an extinct Henry Hoover, tape over the plastic end bit to pad it a bit, rubber mallet- BOSH!

I use an old headset cup covered in leccy tape, turned upside down, and a length of scaffold tube, then just slide the scffold tube onto the old cup and it pops on a treat, bit like a slide hammer.

if you want to remove the headset race and the fork allows you to, you can use a punch and a hammer. just go easy on it.
