What are the rules regarding mixing IG and HG Shimano stuff - if any?

Regarding new stock, there's plenty of HG 8 speed cassettes around, but not so many IG ones. Whereas I've seen chain in both flavours.

Is there any no-no's regarding mixing the two?

Shimano say you shouldn't use an HG chain on IG sprockets because the IG sprockets are wider but SRAM chains work on both (as do KMC chains I think).

Shimano do have different chain widths for HG and IG, I have never tried mixing them.

M950 chainset is specced IG but cassette is HG. On most kit IG was more about front shifting than rear shifting.I don't think IG was never implemented on high end cassettes.

That's IIRC. Will check later.

similar HG/IG dilemna

I have an STX RC front chainset with IG rings.
Wonder if it is going to take an HG chain ( 6 7 or 8 speed) :?:

Chaps

Just use KMC-X9 chain. I've used all sorts of 8 and 7 speed casette combos and always found teh 9 speed chain to work well. These days it's all i stock for all three bikes...............

Here we are....

and

IG chains for XTR with HG cassette and Hyperdrive C chainset
Same for XT, which also had HG chainset.

And the evidence.....
When I started using my Parkpre with M950 chainset and HG91 chain it worked fine.

When I found a source of NOS IG-90 chains (there still seem to be plenty available btw., shameless ad!), I swapped the HG91 out. No change to rear shifting but the front shifting did seem to improve a notch and there seemed to be less chain noise in the extreme middle ring combos. (placebo effect cannot be ruled out though- it was a non-objective test).

So IG is indeed, as I remembered, all about front shifts, not rears. They just happened to also make some low-end IG cassettes for a while. But IG will shift fine on HG.
