is the current Deore stuff equivalent to Deore LX?

Well LX still exists so Deore is the one below that, although where SLX now fits into all this I have no idea. Was a lot easier when the groupsets were arranged neatly into performance/price levels rather than XC or DH (or whatever new stuff is happening at the moment)!

Deore is pretty cheap stuff. If you need brake levers or a front derailleur on a budget I'd not shy away from Deore, but for hubs and cranks and the like, I'd spend more dough and get to at least LX.

Interesting, thanks. I need brake levers and V-brakes front and rear.

I had Deore V's and levers on my LTS.

Great value, looks and good performance.

However, the Deore mechs look cheap and I wouldn't touch them.

Deore
Deore SLX (replaces LX & Hone for 2009, LX is now touring/hybrid)
Deore XT
Deore XTR

Saint is hardcore shiz for those who like airmiles & DH/FR style riding.

Deore is good quality, long lasting but a little heavy if you're a weight weenie.

Deore is the successor to STX-RC, which was a good but not bling groupset, one place below LX. But I personally have never found that LX out-performs STX-RC or Deore, although some LX parts are a little lighter. I think I have recommended before that those 7-sp STX shifters are excellent.

I would put it more like this the touring/hybrid (or cross country/trekking* as shimano says) name for LX seems to be just who to market this level at and it was at and not actually joining the actual touring/hybrid groups Nexus/Nexave but staying in the Mountain range.

Deore is the bottom of the range (well apart from them other bits you find on halfords and Argos bikes like Alivio)
Deore LX is Deore LX
Deore SLX is Deore DX (so is Hone)
Deore XT is Deore XT
and Deore XTR is not as it's (and was originally) just XTR ;)

So SLX is really just bringing back Deore DX into the line up.

(excluding the specialist MTB groupset Saint and the pimped out silly yumwhatsists...)

*from shimano's website Deore LX components are designed for cross country and trekking. & Deore LX, has been functionally re-designed into two groups: New SLX for MTB and new Deore LX for Trekking. though LX keeps it's LX numbering and SLX get the DX numbering ... just like the good old days, oh same targeted use as well ;)

Deore LX is Deore LX

You need to be careful there though because when Deore LX originally came out it was below Deore in the range. It was Deore LX, then Deore, and then Deore XT.

They 'swapped' when Deore DX came out and LX was dropped. Deore went to the bottom and DX sat in the middle.

I was think circa 1990 and a few years after, which is when the majority seem to settle for here.

But before that I don't remember to much in the structure, anyone got a full run down. I know that mombat side does not. (p.s. I was going by model codes)
