All the insightful discussion of Klein got me thinking...I know who invented the Aheadset (and the story is interesting see..

...but I have no idea who really invented the oversize headset. I remember Gary Fisher’s 1 1/2 inch steel and alloy frames but was it Gary Klein who first pressed in oversize? I certainly DO remember that headsets were a major headache in the late 80s. Every ride seemed to induce headset anxiety...and the fact that we were running completely rigid bikes and weeny tyres meant that the headsets took a pounding. The South Downs may be in the South but they are concrete in the summer, and strewn with rubble. Hard on equipment. The answer for me were the Grey or Gorilla headlocks, which at least meant you could do them up in the field. Remember that some multitools began to include a headset spanner...grief...and you needed two people on a ride so you had two. What nonsense. On my blue Marin Palisades I installed a Mavic Dakar headset - which because of its high stack height meant a complete rebuild of the the front end and much expense. And still came loose.

Well done John Rader for the Aheadset. But who do we thank for oversize?

The late great Sheldon would have known...MOMBAT and Sheldon were SO helpful for folklore....

Fisher did Evolution with 1 ¼"

Tange did OverSize 1 ⅛" ~1990

edit to add my musings ...
I think CK went 1 1/8" in 1990 too, Tioga Avenger also, it may well have been Tioga and therefore probably from Dia-Compe and Tange, which would coincide with AheadSet at the time and probably why it became the new standard headset. 1/8 AheadSet

Good question, might look into that one later.

Most things have been around before in regards to bicycles so would imagine the first would have been back in black and white times :)

John Rader may have invented dia-compes version of the aheadset but he didn’t invent the threadless headset, even for use on mountain bikes. Pace had one on their bikes years before Dia-compe released their version and countless versions were produced in the decades before that. In much the same way as Breeze, fisher et al claim to have invented mountain biking, their claim is just the most successful marketing campaign not the truth.

Gosh...indeed I'd forgotten about the PACE headset....and they too think that they got there first:

I guess John Rader rightly can say 'invented the one which most of us use....' and I think that would be accurate....(and pedantic note: I did say Aheadset, not treadless headset....I was aware of all the holes I could fall into.....)

If only they had invented a centring guide on it. So you just slid it on like you do cranks, wouldn't even need a spline, just on notched line or similar.

That's an excellent point - after doing ANYTHING on my cockpit I seem to be incapable of getting the handlebars perfectly straight....
