Kona Smoke

See those present Kona Smokes in the current Kona line up presented as a sort of hybrid. Are they an old mtb design given new lease of life as a hybrid or are they purpose built hybrids that would not be at home offroad. They seem a good bargain for a steel Kona frame be it of a basic nature ?

A few years ago the Smoke was a 26"-wheeled bike with a decent CrMo frame, very cheap parts, and geometry that was very close (if not identical) to Kona's old hardtail geometry.

In about 2007 or 2008 they changed to 700c. The geometry's still pretty close to what it was - the chainstays got a bit longer, and the longer fork pushes the front end up a bit.

With the right tyres I reckon it would be capable enough for a bit of light off-road.

Components aside, the "Worldbike" is closer to what the Smoke was a few years ago:

Got one of these myself a few weeks ago as a work bike.

It is very nice to ride, comfortable & very smooth.

rutland were selling them cheap - what they seem to do though is stick 50 available on the auction, start it off dirt cheap and each week, knock the price up by a tenner.

i had a look at one for a mate the other week and although they aren't bad for the price, the components aren't the best. if you've got a couple of decent mechs & a crank knocking about in the spares box then they could turn themselves into a decent bike for very good money.

Re:

This is a fine thread resurrection. My Smoke 29er: only the frame, P2 fork and headset are original... SLX 2X10, XT V brakes, Mavic rims laced to Hope hubs, carbon handlebar (to make the nice P2s feel smooth) . I like the retro vibe... One day I'll have the frame painted.
