I'm trying to establish the approximate age of a pair of NOS Mavic X517 rims that i just bought to make sure they complement a certain retro build.

My rims are Lemon Yellow if that sheds any light....can anyone help? :?

They were fairly new on the market in 97. I remember taking a knackered wheel into my LBS at the time. Asked for it to be re-built with a 217 but they had none left so ended up with a 517.

I think Citron 517s were introduced to the states in the fall of 96, as I recall. Seems like they were some of the new swank at Interbike that year. 8) My memory is getting worse and worse for this kind of stuff though...

Pretty rims, though, your Citrons

I'm looking at the November 97 MBR and the list of model specs is the 97 ranges - there are no 517s on any 97 models for sale in the UK, all are 217s. None of the ads for wheels, Merlin etc, offered 517s at that point.

By September 98 (I don't have many mags!) it was all 517s. Dave Hinde was selling 517 rims for £18.50, citron for £22.50, CD £25.50 and ceramic £52.

Absent from the 1997 catalogue but X517 appeared at the end of 1997 for the 1998 model year :)

So my memory was one year off! Not too bad for an old guy who spent the 1990's mostly pennyless and drunk!
