replacing HOPE wheel bearings - original ti-glide hubs

Can anyone offer any advice on where to get suitable wheel bearings for my original Hope hubs, tips for replacing and even local shops to that are used to working with them in the South East that might be better for me to consider a ride-in, ride-out service. (My rear wheel has a bit of play in it at the axle and I should get it sorted before brakes start rubbing and shifting is effected under load). It will be worth me doing that as the wheels were rebuilt onto new rims not that long ago and they are otherwise perfect.

I think I'm right in saying that there's 2 in the hub body and another 2 in the freehub.
Best thing to do is take the hub apart and have a look at the black seal on the bearing. There'll b a 4 digit number followed by letters, something like 6904RS. Have a look in the yellow pages for bearing suppliers, hub bearings are common sizes so should be in stock.

Pop the new bearings in the freezer before replacing as it makes them much easier to install

Where abouts in the South East are you?

That's excellent advice thank you S8-Tom

I will try that over the B/H w/e and will be very relieved to get the hubs running smoothly and with no play again.

I am based in Canterbury, Kent, and it is possible that local bike shops might sort this form me but last time I looked into they were quoting silly prices for special ceramic rollers bearings fitted.

I will be happy to do it myself and replace std bearings with std bearings personally as I know I'll probably get another 5 years out of them if correctly fitted, and avoid wear on other components.

A set of KSK bearings (not the best, NSK or SKF are better) from my local chappie cost £6. Sorting the hub bearings out took around half an hour. It's really not hard.

asked the same question a week or so back. Rather than bodge it without the specific tools (which makes it quite a bit dearer) I spoke to Hope. Who replaced bearings and seals for £36 posted. There is a thread around here - Hope top fellas, which explains how quick they were!

No problem. The freehub bearings are a bit more difficult but same principles.
Use sockets to insert the bearings making sure the socket only touches the outer metal part of the bearing.

Get the bearings from Hope or CRC. I tried a local bearing supplier and they wanted nearly £50 for two hubs' worth  . They claimed there's were "top quality" SKF, but even so...

Cost does vary with quality as you'd expect. Think I paid nearly £50 for the bearings in my GT/Hadley hubs. I took the bearings to the supplier who matched them up quality & size wise.

Thanks guys - your comments have inspired me to do something about it and source / fit some replacements.

regards
Matthew
