I need some help with identification of Rock Shox Mag 21 forks, i have what i believe to be 3 pairs of Mag 21's now, one NOS pair, one that came on a fat chance shock a billy and one that i bought off ebay for parts. Now 2 of them have silver stanchons and the ones off the fat chance havea gold coloured stanchons much the same as most modern stanchons fitted to rock shox forks. Are these mag 21's or a different variation of them?

Here are a few pictures:

not an expert but I think the ones with the gold stanchions at mag21 SL's which are light weight ones with ti bits etc.

the chromed ones are steel ,same as quadras ,they might be quadras

the gold ones are alloy (mag 21's i think)

You're both right'ish...

The silver stanchions ARE hard chromed 4130 steel, the gold stanchions are titanium-nitride coated Easton EA 70 alloy.

Quadras, Mag 20s and 30s used the steel tubes until superceded by the Mag 10 and 21 in '94 which used the alloy stanchions. All used magnesium lower legs.

The only titanium used in the SLs were the brake bosses and the 5mm fasteners which gave a minor weight advantage at 2.8lbs as opposed to 3.1lbs. Earlier Mag 21 SLs were 2.4lbs.

The biggest weight saving was to be had by finding an alloy steered pair as opposed to the steel...

The Mag 21 carried on until '96 but was no different to the '95 model. Travel on all models was 46mm, or 60mm with the long travel kit.

Judys ('95 on) were, and are, much better...

Here endeth the lesson for tonight...

Alu stanchions (gold) where only used on the 1994 MAG-21 (ALL of them)
MAG10's that year used the steel stanchions.

But to answer your question, top pic are 1995+ MAG21's colour will be nickelite (spelling may not be correct) as per JUDY colour.
That might have been colour variations in the 96/97 version, not sure)

Next picture is a 1994 MAG21, but with a 1993 steerer and the brace is probably 1994 it differed slightly to the 1993 version in its profile (93 should have date stamp)

Oh and MAG10/21 came in 1993 not 1994 as previously mentioned, also the Alu steerer was part of the 1994 SL/Ti, that was the main weight difference between the two MAG21 models of that year, (bolts and plastic internals saved a few extra grammes).
(no idea if alu stanchion was a standard option in 1995+, or just an optional upgrade or not)

MAG's also went on until 1997 not 1996 and oddly travel did vary by a few mm between the years, no enough to worry about.

MAG vs JUDY, that's up to you, I prefer my MAG's over my 95/6 JUDY even with a steel spring change from the MCU's.

Must get a lot of this into the wiki some time.

Odd that, I copied the details straight from the Rockshox Museum website - complete with scans of their products as they were released - you'd have thought they would have known what they were talking about...

...and I was going by the fiscal year, March '93-'94

Oh, all right - I read it wrong! It was late after all...

you would be a brave man to correct ben when he's on about summat he knows about

Don't mind being corrected though, I make mistakes and get more info from it. That and I make plenty of typo's

I talk model years as that's how they are released.

1997 catalogue in the archive has the MAG21 and Quadra 5 in it, also iirc Sutherlands MAG Service (in the archive) mentions 1997 as the last year

I know most of my info as I wanted to know a bit more about my 1994 MAG21's I my Dad had bought me when my MAG20's snapped and I payed him back from paper rounds. I now have lots of info, plenty of spares, more forks....

String Mombat, Sniperworks, our archive a and this forum from other people chit chat (and a few other places together) and you learn quite a bit of info.

Must get the links into the Wiki Talk so I remember them.

I know very little about the RS-1 though.
