Sabre Venom? any info?

Retro Newbie
Can anyone shed any light on this bike brand? (not to be confused with the more modern megacheap brand of the same name)
I bought it 2nd hand 20yrs ago for my better half and has only seen light use since. Reynolds 531 steel frame. The rear dropout is 130mm.
Unfortunately the b/b is now shot and will need a replacement, also the 7spd STI gear levers don't change properly, feels like a ratchet has failed. If I put drop bars on it and bar end shifters it would make and ace monster-cross / gravel-bike, however 'she' might not agree to that so I might just have to source new gear shifters and brake levers - direct replacements are like hen's teeth !

Re:

Looks a good retro to me...

Squirt WD40 or GT85 in the shifters, wait a mo' then repeatedly shift up and down through the gear range. The problem is the grease goes sticky as it dries out and holds the mechanism. The WD40 solvent will dissolve it and lubricate at the same time.

I think it is actually a Venom Sabre

Yeah! I thought so too but the decals definitely say "sabre racing cycles" so I couldn't make my mind up. Also a friend had a Venom road bike but it didn't have that headbadge.

Thanks for that. This one rides beautifully. it's light, responsive and very comfy, but then the other half doesn't do any knarly trails. Its definitely worth some TLC to keep it going. I might have to treat the inside of the tubes though. When I removed the b/b (well it virtually fell out) there was a bit of rust in there and there a couple of small rust threads near the seat cluster. I think whoever installed the sealed b/b originally had cross threaded it so its going to need retapping too.

I managed to spread the rear triangle from 130mm to 133mm to give me more options on hubs - had to go past 150mm to make this happen.

What I was going to suggest too - works every time, 93% of the time! Blast and waggle... sounds like a nineties Drum&Base duo
