Scott Endorphin, a failed design?

Evening all,

On my mtb wish list for some time has been a Scott Endorphin. I just like the design and is quite racey-looking when built up well.
However, somewhere on this forum I have read about a tendency for these frames to crack.
Can anyone confirm this as being the case generally. Just want to know if I'm wasting my time looking for one.

Thanks in advance for your experience/stories

Mike

Re:

I've not owned one personally, but although I have heard a couple of stories of Endorphin frames cracking I doubt they are much more prone to this than many of the lightweight carbon or aluminium frames from the early to mid-ish 90's, I'm sure there are other brands and models which have a far higher failure rate than the Endorphin.

I don't see much at all on the web about these frames cracking, but this may be of interest...

Cheers Jimo,

Nice to hear other peoples theories on the cracking on that link you sent me

Re:

I know of one in this area that has been pretty much knocking around here from new 1997 if memory serves, I ran across it and its owner a couple of months back and it is still going strong despite the fact the owner uses it like a glorified BMX

It's safe to say thst at 46 and constantly erring on the side of caution, I won't be putting mine through that sort of punishment! Just hope I don't accidentally end up buying that one

Re:

Glorious frames in my limited experience, I believe that it was the advent of discs that saw them off - transferring the crazy amounts of torque that discs produce at the dropout was never going to end well on that design, sadly.

I think you will be safe as he would still want silly money for it (Dreamer) :!: :!: Also I think he is about 42-43 as I am 46 and he is only a couple of years younger than me

That was /is one of my dream bikes. I liked how they engineered in vertical flex on the chainstays to give a bit of softail performance. There used to be a Endorphin frame hanging on the wall at Edinburghs Bike Station, I never knew if it was just being stored or was wall art after it'd cracked 8)

Re:

Always liked the look of these , especially the first ones in black with yellow decals , I did have a quick spin round the paddock on one at Newnham park but it would have been about 1994 ish so i cant remember what it was like TBH

Re:

Got 2 Endorphins as You know Mike
One is still just a frame, but 2nd is one of my favourite bikes to ride
I bought it 2 years ago (2nd hand ofc). Thru this time it was used in true mountains, races few MTB marathons, and rides realy lot of weekend off-road rides.
Still rides perfect and I'm not having any obiections to using it hard (You have to remember, that those frames aren't preety lightweight! My size M weights almost 2kgs, so IMO there's lot of material making it quite strong to craks)

One place You have to look very carefuly is brake bosses / pivots
Sometimes brake bosses breaks in place where they're mounted to the main frame
I saw 2 frames damaged in that place - both from early, pre AVS series*, and both were riding with Magura brakes (so maybe that's the reason?)

* from memory - all 96&97 models + 98 Elite Racing.
