Shimano groupset hierarchy

Looking for bits for my Ali O project and whilst i understand current Shimano Groupset hierarchy, don't necessarily follow the early nighties.

Obviously XTR is top of the tree followed by XT, but what about STX DX and SL, LX?

What would be suitable and fitting for my Ali O, bearing in mind I'm a lowly paid public sector worker?

I'm sure somebody has already documented some of this so if someone could point me in the right direction I'd be grateful.

Cheers

Spot On!

That's a handy link.

I'm thinking it should be LX or above then? I'm aware the Ali O was originally offered with various groupsets, was LX the minimum?

Cheers

If it's Shimano yes. They also specced Suntour XC Pro, Expert and Sport.

They did cheaper stuff with STX-RC IIRC but not till later.

The 1992 Alu-O ?

Shimano LX / DX / XT / XTR (XTR had just arrived bringing 8 speed with it)
Suntour XC Pro (MD) / Comp (MD) / LTD (MicroDirve had just arrived, but still at 7speed)

Mavic and Campag may have been an option if they still produced anything as they where in previous years...

Unless you want to go Suntour, then DX/XT mix would be seen a lot in this era.

I've always found STX-RC very under rated.Perhaps the best value for money shimano groupo IMO.

I had quite a bit of STX-RC stuff for a very long time and I agree - it was very nice looking (I think the "-RC" part was really just the nice chromica finish wasn't it?), light enough and very long lasting.

The only fly in the ointment was the odd chainring setup... if it wasn't for that I'd still be using the chainset, it was a whole lot more classy looking and lighter than the modern Deore one it was replaced with :-(
