Right I'm new but I'd like to know the definition of retro? I have 1999 green Rockhopper that I some times ride and I think its cool 8) but is it retro ? Also I now have a Kilauea 97 which is Retro but if I put crossmax sl's, 08 xtr, thomson post and stem and sid's is it still retro ?

Ask Wu-Tangled on here what retro is, and he'll tell you

'retro is a state of mind'

so, there's your answer

A lot of us have a mixture of new and old school bikes, me being one of them.

But for me personally, old school is where my heart is. I grew up riding MTB's in the mid 90's, so I'm at home here!

Is doesn't matter what retro means to you, just as long as you feel at home here!

Welcome! :D

dont put xtr 08 on that sweet kona you have - keep it retro and wast.... spend more monay on here doing it up.

If you put cross max on i'll take the wheels off you :P

Well put!

Personally my retro-ness is mid 90's based, however my most used bike is my 2005 KHS (mainly because its just so good.... and i dont own a suitably sized 90's steel kona at the moment)

I mountain biked heaps in the early 90's (a boss) then gave up until 1999. Now ride road/mountain and commute. I was drawn to this site after seeing a Kona for sale when looking for an alternative to my epic or carbon roadbike for commuting. I didn't realise there was such a following for retro ... a little slow I know. Love the bikes I have seen on this site and really inspired to create something for myself. It wont involve any crossmax.

Cheers

For me, retro represents that transitional era between the classic relaxed clunker in mass production period, and the current trend toward Asian manufacturing and flat black paint for everything under then sun. Say 1990-1995. There are older cooler bikes like some of the Cunninghams and Ritcheys you see around here, but I'd call those more 'classic' than retro.

Like in automobiles...if you've got a classic Porsche, your talking about 356s and Speedsters and the like...cars that created the definition of Porsche. "Retro" Porsche would be the 20 year old 911SC with a sprinkling of modern parts...just a sprinkling...that can still hang with the best of the modern era on a track day. It sees use, it can do 90% of what the new toys can do in the right hands, and yet it somehow transends descriptions like 'nice older Porsche', and represents well, in feel, as an example of what Porsche was like 20 years ago.

A 15 year old Fat, with M900 and a nice light modern 85mm fork would do well against a modern cross country machine. To me, that is Retro. But then again...everyone is entitled to their idea of the term, and there are no wrong answers! 8)

For me, retro finishes where 'V' brakes and suspension begins. That varies depending on the manufacturer.
