STX shifters - a quick Q?

Did Shimano ever make 7sp STX shifter units without indicator windows that were separate from the brake levers or am I imagining things?

I remember something like that but can't find any evidence...maybe it was Alivio? I'm sure something very much like a MC40 shifter with no indicator existed.

Bit of googling reveals they were the SL-MC37

7 & 8spd without windows with grey mounts, black mounts, silver mounts. I used to get at least 2-3 pairs a week via the tip or car-boot sales. Now they have all but vanished.

*EDIT

Knew I wasnt going mad: MC-38 8spd

Bam! Thats the ones. Were quite popular with people who had midrange bikes and were upgrading their brakes (e.g. to Magura or Vs) but keeping their old 7/8 speed drivetrain.

Also the STX-RC 8 speed ones are MC38.

Can buy both NOS for quite reasonable amounts of money and they work pretty well for what they are...I wouldn't get 2nd hand ones as they do get sloppy in their dotage.

I've just had a set of these turn up on a secondhand bike. Having trouble getting gears to work correctly, looks like I've got 7 speed shifters and an 8 speed cassette. Can't see a part number but they look like SL-MC37 shifters, only 7 'clicks' which makes setting the gears up difficult.

The archives show they were part of the Alivio, STX and STX-RC groupsets in 1997.

No 1998 catalogue so can't see if they carried on into subsequent years.

8 speed shifters will have 7 clicks!
Check your cables (and more importantly the outers) are in good condition first. Most indexing problems are caused by worn or sticky cabling. Shimano grease tends to gum things up, so give them a good blast through with WD40 to soften it and start things off.

Mt Raleigh MTrax Ti 2000 had STX 7 speed with windows. They outlasted the glued together frame.

Here you go - the 1998 catalogue pages does show a bit of crossover of components between group-sets, and don't seem complete. The Shimano listings that I have on record make it a little clearer. but this is something to be going on with:
