What sort of rubber is used in bicycle brake pads?

Hi there

Can anyone tell me where I could buy some rubber of the sort used in bike brake pads?

here is some background info to my query:

A while ago I bought a royal sunbeam, for fun! Here is a picture : https://www.flickr.com/photos/55203562@ ... /lightbox/

there is one small issue, it has rod brakes that use a somewhat unique sort of pad. Mine are currently ok but when they do wear down I am loathe to pay for a rare and expensive origional replacement... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vintage-bicyc ... 3ce16f5adf

So I thought I could mill my own ones out of rubber. Kool stop make their brake pads by milling rubber, and I have access to a manual and a CNC mill, so why not? Can anyone tell me what sort of rubber is used in brake pads and where I might be able to buy some?

Ah, yes. That is quite correct. In fact one of the rear pads is indeed leather, I wasnt sure how to go about such a thing so thourght rubber might be the way. Though if anyone has any leather suggestions I am open to that. Interesting idea
