    Bar ends yay or nay?

If I'd have to hazard a guess, I'd say I probably was working on the bike. After adjustments, on the work stand, I normally will run through all the gears. The big/big would be the final gear. Hence, the final position. Obviously it wouldn't stay there because the final step is a ride.

    Bar ends yay or nay?

Meh...I never noticed it. I don't ride in that gear, ever.

    Bar ends yay or nay?

All my bikes are vintage 80's and 90's except for 1 bike. I still use bar ends on a couple of bikes and I also recently switched over from bar ends to a Scott AT-4 set up on my 1990 E-stay bike.

Help needed 97 Gary Fisher Joshua X0

Could they be bent causing it to bind? Page 2 of the link shows the special parts, pivot axle assembly. Special torques show the pivot bolt (fixed side) and pivot bolt (removable side) https://www.vintage-trek.com/Trek-Fisher-Klein-Lemond/1997specmanualFisher.pdf

Are you loosening the correct side? There is a fixed side and a removable side at the swingarm pivot.
