I was using the original 113mm axle and went from an STX MC30 to an LX M570, which I think was still the correct length. A shorter bottom bracket, would make it worse, as the chainline would be more acute (less straight).

I ran a 9 speed chainset on an otherwise 7 speed system and it worked ok. The only problem was that when in the middle chainring and one of the two smallest sprockets at the rear, the chain would rub on the larger chainring. A narrower 9 speed chain solved the problem.

If you're 'flexible' about period correctness a later Dura Ace or Ultegra rear mech can be quite light. 7800(185g), 7700(195g), 6600(205g) for example and they should be fine for up to 28 teeth.

I use bits from road bikes, rear mechs and hubs for example, which are a bit lighter. As you're running the chainset as a double, a road rear mech will be ok. A 'compact' chainset such as an LX M563 will be quite a bit lighter than the one you've got also, I think.

I think it's a PH501 from about 1985/6/7. I think it was called a 'Ventoux' . I had a 'Triathlon' which was similar but was white with 501 forks as well as mainframe. I. bought mine in 1987.

I've got one of these. The seatpost is 26.2 mm.

Don't forget to consider the size. The Saracen looks bigger, maybe 19 inch, whereas the others look smaller. I'd choose the one that fits the best.

You can remove the cup, just knock it out from the rear. Putting it back in is also quite easy, use an axle/washer/lock nuts.

If it has a BCD of 94mm (compact), the distance between adjacent holes should be about 55mm.
