This is mine. It is a GT Timberline. I use in a power trainer and as a commuter.

I have change the wheels (50 euros both new double wall). It is now 9 speed Alivio and sram attack because I have one kit. It will go back to the original STX and 8 speeds when the casette have enough wear. Fork works fine (Betor oil-spring) and I have add a cheap carbon saddle for less than 20 euros that is very confortable and light weight.

Cost: a bit less than 200 euros and I think it is cooler than a big box bicycle.

I like cheap projects. I use more this bicycle than the others. It is more fun. You change any thing, test other stuff ... I like it. Next: go back to 8 speed. :D

Re:

I do love a cheap buid, which is exactly what my "Go to" bike is, brought as a frameset with two boxes of bits (wheels, 90% of the gearset & a tonne of other tat from other bikes) for £50, I added a new BB which I had as I had previously purchased it but was the wrong size  The Raceface crank taken from a tip find pro-flex frame (£10 for the lot) Magura brakes snared from a another tip buy that I rebuilt & sold on (these owe me £0) most other bits are out of the tip find parts boxes, saddle I think was £16 but has since had a free upgrade & £5 or £8 for the seat post (I can't remember) & a set of cables. the only other real expense was the bombers brought when I first started building but never used (£60)

£5 for bike, plus cost of inners and rattle can.

That is truly a cheap bike. But I always end changing tires, wires and all that stuff that have lot of wear. That is no more than 40 euros and the bicycle rides quite well. I have find a shop that sell wires for 1 euro instead of the 2,60 of the shimano ones. Tires at 10-12 euros in chain reaction (Schwalve or other brand with discount) etc

I cannot stop changing stuff.

Here's mine. Complete bike was an ebay bargain at £70.

wheels it came with were sold and more than covered the the purchase price, fitted some other wheels I had in the garage.

total bike cost - minus £30.

Nice cheap builts, the less money you spend the best result- The bontrager with XTR and the purple Claud butler with quite nice componentes, I like that fork and the XT, good looking bike :D .

Re:

Had a lovely 92 Marin Eldridge Grade for £100 a few years ago. Lovely to ride and solid as a rock. Used it to haul the kid around on a tag-a-long and sold it to another local dad for the same purpose.

Not my pic but mine was similar but with a Flexstem.
