Tensioning a disc drive

OK - I have a disc drive pro in what looks to be pretty much unused condition (36h). The seller said it had been stored away for 20 years. It's mounted on an unused araya rim.

It's true and round etc but I think that might be simply a function of the unused rim - as the tension of the sheets themselves feels a bit 'looser' than I was expecting. Having never owned one of these I don't really know what 'normal' looks or feels like really.

Any advice welcome - including anyone in the London area that has one of these and has experience tensioning them and could possibly help me out???

First off, the 'sheets' aren't going to provide tension. They're simply plastic covers glued in place over the kevlar cord to prevent debris from reaching in and doing damage. The cord is what make the wheel round, replacing the spokes with tension wound throughout the wheel. Hence, "tension disc." Ride it. It wont last long, so you may at least enjoy it for a short while and hang it on the wall or use for photos after it grenades.

Re:

Providing your disc drive has never been left tensioned up over the years the Kevlar cord shouldn't have stretched or at least that is what I was told when I bought a new one bitd.

I remember I had to go back to my local store nearly every other week to get mine re-tensioned as it never stayed true after a xc race ,they got so bored with it they gave me a brand new Mavic crossmax wheelset!!

So as Mike has said just enjoy it while it lasts...

Re:

Well I'd like to ride it - but equally I don't want "ride it while it lasts" to turn into "ride it once and watch it fold in half beneath you"...

So if anyone has built one of these things and has some info on how to do this please do post.

There's meant to be an expert for disk wheels in Bristol prolly a little distant for you but maybe worth a Google using the site custom search. Have seen him mentioned on here a few times.
