Today's Ride

33 mile round trip to the pub for a pint and lunch. This is the best time of year for the weather here in the Sonoran Desert. Looks like it’s about time to clean the Redline up again this afternoon. It’s really dusty and the chain is starting to get a bit noisy too and I can’t stand that. IMG_4106.webp IMG_4107.webp

Very windy yet again today. Didn't plan to ride, but when popping out for coffee in the morning I ran into the rider of this:

Lovely young chap, a Brit out here to ride from Melbourne to Sydney via Canberra. He'd already done 40km on dirt roads and had another 100 or so to go, with 90kph gusty winds and occasional showers to make it interesting. That got me motivated -- as well as having my '99 Explosif back out of storage after more than a year. When it went in, I hadn't resolved a front derailleur shifting issue, but when it was back, it only took a few minutes to get it sorted. So took off late -- around 6pm -- when the wind had dropped a bit, and did a nice, easy 20k around my favourite badlands. This included reaching the banks of the Shoalhaven River, where people sometimes still pan for gold.

I could hear a Sacred Kingfisher somewhere in the trees, but could't catch sight of it -- lovely birds, if not as jewel-like as the little Malachites and Azures associated with the species. Then I found one small child's boot:

Found a new section of track had been opened up, which the Explosif ate up without effort.

This took us past a dramatic treestump, legacy of many a bushfire:

And so home, with alternating clouds and sunshine making for some pretty views. I'd like to think those sheep were as impressed with the Explosif as I was.

Those Australian skies always look fantastic. (I hope it's not just an effect of the camera.)

I had my normal ride this morning on the Redline. I ride a 25-30 mile loop almost every day and it’s hard not to want to grab that bike. The weather was so perfect today that I decided to spin up the bearings again on my old Klein. I was able to get 10 more miles for the day on a beautiful sunset ride around some of the community lakes.

For the low end of Klein’s lineup in 1998 it’s still a very nice bike to put the miles on.

Early morning rides never get old, especially on the coast. Quite funny seeing how many of the fair weather folk have disappeared and arguably one of the most popular routes that'd easily get 50 riders a day as per strava segments dwindling down to a handful. Then again I suspect you have to be a bit crazy for 5AM alarms and heading out in the pitch black 😂

I wish I could get up that early 😁
