Good quality steel still takes a lot of beating for longevity, regardless of strength and rigidity, fatigue from road/trail shock will kill an Aluminium or CF bike way before steel, (so long as internal rust doesn't set in)

This is how my first steel merckx ended up after some drink-driving t0sser pulled out in front of me.
