Deore DX rear derailleur & 36T sprocket?

I know my long cage Deore DX derailleur has a max. capacity of 32T (according to Shimano). However, since I also use my bike to pull my kid's trailer, I was playing with the idea of using a 9sp 12-36 cassette to protect my knees.

Is it possible to get decent shifting if I go for a 36T sprocket? I'm presuming already the derailleur should work fine with 9 speed using the correct 9sp shifter.

You may be confusing the max capacity with the max size rear cog that the deralier can "reach out" to.
You should have no problems with a long cage 9 speed mech though. I can only suggest that you fit the bigger cassette and try it with your current mech, if it don't work there are plenty of 9 speed rear mechs for sale on here.

Try it with the mech you have. Try screwing the B-tension adjustment screw all the way in, or try removing the screw and screwing it back in from the other side.
Usually the problem is that the mech won't clear the largest sprocket and so won't shift up onto it.
If that doesnt work then you could try a "rear mech extender" for a couple of £'s

He's not the max cog size is 28/32T for the DeoreDX. (Super long cage is 32T, aka long cage MTBers)

They certainly can stretch to 34T as that was a mod BitD before 8spd.

Max capacity was ~38T and smallest cog was species as 12T, but then 11T hadn't come out yet.

I've been using a Deore DX rear mech with an 8 speed 11-36 cassette for a while now and it works fine. I had to remove the B-tension screw and put it in backwards to get keep the top jockey wheel away from the 36t sprocket.

The 11-36 8-speed sprocket was made by separating the sprockets of an 8 speed 11-34 and a 9 speed 12-36 cassette, using the 8 speed spacers. The 9 speed sprockets aren't different enough in width to affect the indexing.

I believe Sunrace make an 8 speed 11-36 cassette, but I've only ever seen it in their catalogue and never for sale in shops.

I use it with 7 speed (8 click) Deore XT thumbshifters. More reliable than any modern STI system I have tried since.

I'm using a DX mech on my Orange, might give it a go with 36T sometime.

The question is will it work and the answer is yes, but capacity refers to the number teeth on the big cog minus the number of teeth on the smallest added to the number of teeth on the largest chainring minus the number of teeth on the smallest chainring I believe.
